Fuel A Healthy Body this National Health Center Week

National Health Center week recognizes the services and contributions of community health centers. Health centers not only prevent illness and foster wellness in the most challenging populations, they produce innovative solutions to the most pressing healthcare issues in their communities. They reach beyond the walls of conventional medicine to address the factors that may cause sickness, such as lack of nutrition, mental illness, homelessness and addiction. Because of their long record of success in innovation, managing healthcare costs, and reducing chronic disease, leaders in Congress have declared health centers a model of care that offers a "bipartisan solution to the primary care access problems" facing our nation.

While there are countless reasons to celebrate Family First Health, among the most important is our 46 year history of providing access to affordable, high-quality, cost-effective care to anyone in the community who needs it.

This National Health Center Week, Family First Health is promoting its Fuel a Healthy Body campaign with some fun videos and photos from staff. Head to our Facebook page, vote for your favorite and they can win lunch from LettUsKnow!

Fueling a Healthy Body is something we can all do by just making small steps toward a healthier life. It can be as easy as getting 8 hours of sleep, adding fruits and veggies into your meals, or being a little more active with the kids. Learn more about our #FuelAHealthyBody campaign here.

New town, existing need, new digs

In Fall 2016, we will open the Family First Health Columbia Center in Columbia, Lancaster County. A community needs assessment found that affordable, quality healthcare for those uninsured and underinsured was hard to find.  At our new Columbia location, we'll offer family medicine services led by Dr. Marie Kellett, as well as integrated behavioral health services. We're looking forward to better serving the needs of those living in Columbia, as well as the nearby communities of Wrightsville and others along the Susquehanna. Details on the grand opening and how to become a patient coming  soon!

Employee Spotlight: Meet Maria Fletcher

Title:  Dentist
Started at Family First Health:  2015

Maria Fletcher was pretty much destined to become a dentist - a fourth generation one, actually. Third generation female dentist, even.

"It's in my blood," she says with a laugh. "But Dad always encouraged us to do what we love. And I fell in love with doing it. I felt like it was my calling."

Dr. Maria Fletcher moved to York from Chicago, where she was born and raised. It was during her master's program at Midwestern that she met her now husband. And he's the one who brought her to York when he started his family medicine residency here at York Hospital.

How she ended up at Family First Health is actually a little bit because of him, too - and Dr. LaJuan Mountain's mother's fault. Fletcher's husband was on rotation with Dr. Mountain's mother who told him all about Family First Health. From there, she applied and said she came to learn all the great benefits to working here.

Her favorite part of being a dentist is getting to know new people and help them with their smiles. They are, of course, one of the first things you notice about a person.

When she's not working, Dr. Maria Fletcher and her husband like to visit his family in Dover and visit Rehoboth Beach. Her favorite hobby is geocaching, and says there are always a lot of places around to find it. Her dog, Lana - a half Pomeranian and half Chihuahua mix - often tags along to help find things.
