Spring 2016 Bills Signed Into Law

What have they been doing in Springfield?

Have you checked the date on your savings bonds lately?

(HB 5607/PA 990556): Provides that US Savings Bonds will be presumed abandoned when such bond has remained unclaimed and unredeemed for five years after its date of final extended maturity.

People caught in possession of 10 grams or less of marijuana will now face a fine of up to $200, as opposed to being arrested and possibly facing jail time, under a new law (Senate Bill 2228) signed by Gov. Rauner July 29. The new law makes Illinois the 17th state in the country to adopt a measure that decriminalizes small amounts of marijuana.

College Students Wanting to Vote in November Election

I know what a busy time it is getting the kids off to college, but you might want to put this on the check list.  If your college student is wanting to vote in the upcoming election, they can download the ballot request form and send it to the clerks office to ensure receiving a ballot by mail at school. If they need to register to vote, call our office before coming to make sure we have a registrar in the office.  847 223-2847

Available to students away at school, this program simplifies voting for students who are registered to vote and request the ballot at their school address. Enrollment is valid for two years and each summer the clerk's  office confirms the student address at school for the coming year. Complete the Enrollment Form (PDF) which can be printed, signed and mailed to their office.

Secretary of State Mailing Reminders Again

Illinois drivers will once again receive a reminder letter to renew their yearly license plate sticker from the Illinois Secretary of State’s Office. The Secretary of State’s Office says funds from the recent stopgap budget allow vehicle registration reminder letters to be reinstated. The practice of mailing reminders was halted in October due to the previous budget impasse.

A State Journal-Register article reported that from January to mid-July, about 563,400 motorists were assessed more than $11 million in late fees for failing to renew license plate stickers on time. During the same period in 2015, when renewal notices were still being mailed, about 252,700 motorists paid $5.5 million in late fees.

To help with the costs of mailing reminders, the Secretary of State’s Office says they are drafting legislation that would allow advertising on the mailings. Those that sign up for email reminders are removed from the office’s mailing list, which also helps reduce associated postage costs. Drivers can sign up for email notifications by visiting www.cyberdriveillinois.com.

To register for the program, vehicle owners need their assigned registration ID and PIN. That can be found on their current vehicle registration card. If that information is not available, motorists can call the Secretary of State public inquiry division at 1-800-252-8980 to obtain their Registration ID and PIN. Vehicle owners will then receive a series of three email notices per vehicle each year detailing the upcoming vehicle expiration date.

Commonwealth Edison Scams

Beware of giving your Com Ed Account number to anyone.  I received this email from one of our residents.

"I have received calls from people who say they are from Com Ed.and they are going to give you a discount for being a good customer, they then want you to get your bill so they can get your acct#. I called Com Ed and they stated if these suppliers get your acct # they can legally switch your acct."

Upon checking the ComEd scams, I also saw this.  ComEd has seen an increase in reports of individuals calling ComEd customers and falsely claiming their electric service will be disconnected unless payment is made. These impersonators instruct customers to buy a prepaid credit card and call back to a different phone number with the personal identification number (PIN) or other personal information. They also use a tactic called “spoofing” to manipulate the Caller ID displayed phone number so that it appears as a ComEd number.

Remember,  ComEd representatives will never call you to ask you for cash or request that you purchase a prepaid credit card to make a payment on your bill. If you have concerns about the status of your account, call ComEd’s Customer Service line at 1-800-334-7661(1-800-EDISON1).

If you believe you have been the target of a phone scam, ComEd urges you to contact the Illinois Attorney General’s office at 1-800-386-5438(TTY 1-800-964-3013), or visit the Illinois Attorney General's website and click on the “Protecting Consumers” link.
