Bringing Aviation and Music Together

"Pilot Musicians sharing their passion
while encouraging and educating youth (& adults) in the
science and art of aeronautics and music."

Have you reached out to the 2016 FMA Solo winner, Sarah Coffelt, with words of encouragement, advice, and or moral support? Follow this link, FMAsolo , to see how she is progressing and leave a comment. Sarah has selected a Piper PA28-140 and a wonderful instructor in Tullahoma, Tennessee. She recently experienced a grueling two week band camp as the band captain, leaving little time to breathe.

Want to become involved? You can, with little effort. Try the following two things to start with.
  • Number  1  -  Post something to share to one of the FMA social media sites: Facebook, Twitter,Google+, etc.
  • Number 2 - Host or encourage someone to host a HangarJam!

This edition is packed with information on members, students achieving new heights, events, and much more! Also, don't miss the Home Field Spotlight. This month we visit Anahuac, Texas - home field to FMA Texas Ambassador, Robert Duke.

MESSAGE FROM JOHN
Another AirVenture in the bag! It is always a fun time in Oshkosh reuniting with old friends while making new ones. Seeing so many fellow members creating memories is the highlight. From the trip to OSH to the trials and tribulations of a week long event, this is what stories are made from.

I was busy talking to potential corporate members of which we now have several new ones: LAMA, Swift Fuels, and DeLand Sport Aviation Village & Showcase. We also have several potentials: Frasca Simulators, NASAO, GAMA, and FAPA.aero. In addition, we have gained opportunities for future participation thanks to the efforts of members like Jeff Auen, Mark Schneider, Gary Filip, and others.

I received a call, as has happened in years past, for a list of members attending AirVenture to be interviewed by EAA Radio. This year was the best yet! In the past the FMA slot was at 7:30am. This year Jim Gray with EAA Radio changed that to 12:30pm. Thank you Jim! Look for the short story and links to the interviews in the "Events" section below.

The idea to place tip jars/containers at major events, HangarJams, and  member's gigs to help raise funds for FMA scholarships and programs has gained speed. We can keep tabs as to how much was raised, by who, and where to award prises at the end of the year. Sponsors have already indicated they would be happy to donate product. A great way to add a little competition to the process.

I am looking for an appropriate container, one that collapses, to
have our logo printed on it and perhaps a few words to entice folks to contribute. Once created, we will purchase a bunch to have several at all the major events and enough to send out to regions. Want to help? If you have ideas as to an appropriate container and artwork, please join others like Len Assante and Dave Williford who are working to develope this.

I hear some say that HangarJams  can be like meetings. I agree! Whether you hold them monthly, quarterly, or any other interval, HangarJams can be FMA's equivalent of meetings.  How to start one? If you do not have access to a hangar, find a fellow aviator who has access to a hangar, is a musician or music lover, and willing to host one. The terminal/FBO building can also be a great place to start. Then, invite local fellow aviators and your local musicians who have a desire to fly or passion.  That is all it takes. The rest is magic!

To find a HangarJam near you, visit the "Events" section in this issue. Jeff Auen has an event coming up real soon at Essex Skypark (W48) on August 13-14. Don Bilbrey has one at Georgetown (KGEO) on August 20. David Peel is working on one at Front Range, Jay Mason has one in the works in Los Angeles, Gary Piper near Nashville, while Marcia Buckingham and Gary Filip are working on ones in Florida. I hope to hear from many more of you as this initiative builds steam.

My trip to visit Dayton back in June was packed with
Hawthorne Hill
interesting aviation and music highlights. Unfortunately Hunter Hayes wasn't in town. I wanted to see how he was coming along with flight training. I did get to see many historical sites including the Wright brothers house, Hawthorne Hill. Completed in 1914, Hawthorn Hill in Dayton, Ohio, was designed by Wilbur and Orville Wright with the aid of the Dayton architectural firm of Schenck and Williams.  Unfortunately, Wilbur died shortly after they completed and approved the plans. I'll share more next month.

It was my extreme pleasure to present corporate member and sponsor Sky-Tec ( makers of the Flyweight starter) two awards for their support of FMA and specifically the FMA Solo Program in 2016 and 2017.

Rich Chiappe, general manager, accepted the plaques, FMA bag, and FMA shirts at their annual Starteritaville party which kicks off AirVenture for many vendors and friends. Rich spoke about how he jump in on the ground floor of the program and encouraged other corporations  to do the same.  Thank you Rich and all the folks at Sky-Tec for your support which allows FMA to help others.

Stay safe, become engaged, active, and above all... Blue Skies !

Sincerely,
John

EAA Radio Interviews

Each year during AirVenture in Oshkosh, WI. EAA Radio holds daily interviews with FMA members. In the past they were at 7:30 in the morning. This year, 2016, they moved the interviews to 12:30; a much better time for all involved. These interviews were live, broadcasted over 96.5 FM / 1210 AM.  Did you listen? If not, or if you want to listen again, they are archived. The links are listed below for your enjoyment. Please consider sharing them with family and friends, especially at your local airport.
Will you be attending AirVenture next year? Contact us if you are willing to be interviewed.

Jay Mason -  ATP
That's right... Jay Mason is now an ATP rated pilot. Let's all give him a round of applause!  In addition to being a top notch musician and flight instructor, Jay is now held to the highest esteem in both of his worlds.

STUDENT MEMBERS IN THE NEWS
Aaron Smokovitz
2016 FMA Solo Finalist
I grew up surrounded by the 2 things that give life to this association. My grandpa was a pilot and played trumpet. My dad and my uncle shared the same passions with my dad (trumpet player) growing up to be a band director and a pilot as a hobby, and my uncle growing up to be the head mechanic of Detroit Metro delta airlines, as well as a pilot and musician as a hobby.

These two are the two biggest role models of my life. I grew up with both worlds surrounding me, and I couldn't think of two better worlds to revolve around! I worked very hard as a kid and still now in my musical studies and had the fortunate opportunity to be featured in many bands, winning scholarships for private music lessons, and have been Michigan all-state since my freshman year of high school.

I have always wanted to be a pilot but finance has always been tight with a family of 8, and that fact always circles in my head whenever I ask for money. As for now, I hope to carry on my family tradition of, well, flying musicians!

We wish all of our student members much success in their studies and pursuit of flying and playing music.

Home Field Spotlight
Your Home Field:
FMA members come from all over the world. In the interest of promoting our members, their airports, and aviation, we thought it would be interesting to showcase one member's home field each month.

This month's Home Field Spotlight focuses on  Chambers County Airport (T00) in Anahuac, Texas - home to member and Texas Ambassador, Robert Duke.

Tell us about  Chambers County Airport (T00):
Anahuac - Chambers County Airport is a county-owned general aviation airport located in unincorporated Chambers County, Texas, United States 1 mile east of the city of Anahuac.

Anahuac (pronounced anna-wack) was a Mexican fort in 1830 named after  an Aztec. The first shot of the Texas Revolution was in Anahuac. Anahuac is on the mouth of the Trinity River.

I really like flying out of Anahuac for several reasons. One, its not that far from home, about 25 miles, or 30 minute drive. Not bad. The price is just right - $0 to tie down. There aren't any airports that charge nothing for tie downs. Another big plus is the gas prices are very cheap. Many people make it a destination because the gas is cheaper than anywhere. During the GatorFest, it's even cheaper.

Are there any nearby attractions for FMA members?
There are several nature preserves in the area. Anahuac is considered to be the Alligator capital of Texas and they have the big Anahuac Alligator festival once a year. It's usually the 3rd weekend in September. This year it will be Sept 16-18. That weekend the airport has a big fly-in breakfast and later hamburgers. They offer free rides and passes for the GatorFest if you fly in. There's a lot of excitement then and many planes fly in.

It's a short flight to Tiki Bar & Grill on the beach. Taxi right up to the restaurant and have a great meal. We had a fly in of about 20 planes and one helicopter for a breakfast there a year ago. Its walking distance to the beach on the Gulf of Mexico. Lots of scenery!
