The best way to beat the heat of summer in Durham Region is always with cool experiences, and August is filled with them! The festival frenzy turns tasty this month with several food festivals popping up throughout the region, while outdoor activities continue to flourish. Attend a food festival, cycle along the waterfront, or even spectate an adrenaline-filled superbike race. These are just some of the ways to make the most of August. Looking to tantalize your taste buds? Well look no further, because Taste Ajax is returning for its third year on Aug. 13! The annual food event is a culinary experience for the whole family. Food trucks from all over the GTA arrive at Rotary Park, giving attendees the opportunity to savour unique flavours and creations from these mobile master chefs! 

Local craft breweries are on site to quench your thirst. Other activities and attractions include live entertainment, some children's activities, and local artisan displays.

PICASSO'S PICNIC
Let your children's creativity run wild on Aug. 20 at the annual Picasso's Picnic in Bowmanville. Experience a wide range of arts, performers, workshops, young artists and local arts-related businesses. 
The art festival is fun for the whole family and children of all ages.

SUMMER CYCLING
Want to get active for a good cause this month? Participate in a weekend of cycling with the United Way on Aug. 13 and 14.

The first event on Saturday, Aug. 13 is a more leisurely ride along the Durham Waterfront Trail, and is the perfect way to gear up for the Ride4UnitedWay on Sunday. 

Sunday's ride has a 60-, 100-and 160-kilometre course with $1,500 in cash prizes available.  The courses encompass some of the more scenic and interesting routes in north Durham and include rolling hills and some steeper inclines.

ACCESSIBLE KAYAKING
Durham Region has a new way for people of all abilities to explore and enjoy the beauty of Lake Simcoe. The newly unveiled  Beaverton Kayak Launch Dock is located at the Beaverton Harbour, and is open to people of all abilities. 

This special launch dock will allow those with special needs to easily and safely access their paddle-craft. It will also be a great benefit to residents of all abilities who want a means of getting in and out of their kayak or canoe without having to wade into the water. 

The dock includes a transfer bench that makes it easy to enter and exit the water and allows any kayaker, who uses a wheelchair, to get in and out of their craft on their own.

BACON, BEER AND CIDER FESTIVAL
Celebrate all things bacon   on Aug. 27 at the 2016 Bacon, Beer and Cider Festival

Enjoy a fun  afternoon of food, drink, live music and of course - bacon!  Craft breweries and cideries will be offering up samples of their refreshing wares, and food trucks and vendors will be offering up all things bacon as the perfect savoury drink companion!

MAP YOUR CITY 
Sport Durham and Map Your City (MYC) are excited to announce a new interactive and engaging way to explore the Durham Waterfront Traila new interactive trail map and mobile app pilot project! 

The trail map and mobile app both include trail access information, way-finding points, amenities and the many things to see and do along the trail and throughout Durham's beautiful waterfront communities. All of the locations on the map tell stories about the Durham Waterfront Trail and have useful filters to help trail users plan their explorations. 

The interactivity also means that anyone can add their own favourite places, share stories and read and comment on other trail users' experiences. They can even share from MYC to social media!

ONTARIO LACROSSE FESTIVAL
The Ontario Lacrosse Festival is one of the marquee summer sport events in Durham Region. Returning for its 13th year, the festival is being held in arenas across five local area municipalities from July 29 to Aug. 7. 

Approximately 560 teams, made up of 11,000 players and coaches will be participating. With an overall estimated attendance of 60,000, it's the largest annual youth sport event in Canada!

SUPERBIKE WEEKEND
Attention adrenaline junkies! Canada's top motorcycle riders are roaring into Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP) from Aug. 19 to 21 for the National Mopar Canadian Superbike Championship This is the premier stop of the Superbike season, along with several other national classes. 

There is plenty of entertainment happening off-track as well. Enjoy BMW Motorrad Days, with on-and off-road bikes to test, live music and riding merchandise, as well as demonstration rides featuring the latest bikes from the top manufacturers.
