Bugle Calls
Issue No. 1032
July 2016
Bob Bugle-B-1001
Many view achieving perfection as a worthy goal. Striving for anything less means you didn't try hard enough. Conventional wisdom seems to be that people who are perfectionists succeed in business and in life because they refuse to settle for "second best".

Our July issue of "Bugle Calls" will focus on the position that this conventional thinking is wrong, and that much more can be accomplished by those who strive for the "Very Good".

Warm Regards,

Perfection is the Enemy of the Very Good
By Bob Bugle
Bob Bugle-B-1001Perfection is what many of us are striving for. Coaches and athletes strive to play the perfect game. Business executives and politicians strive to negotiate the perfect deal. Adults with children strive to be the perfect parents. The list goes on and on.

The Problem with Perfection
If you're not familiar with the law of diminishing returns, it states that at a certain point adding more effort will not produce significantly more gains. The challenge is knowing when you've reached that point. For many managers this is an important question: How far do I keep going on a project before I declare that it's "good enough" - and that further effort will not significantly change the outcome?
