Jesus: Forgiving Victim—A webcast with James Alison
and Richard Rohr
Sunday, August 14 at 11:45 am
in the Bloom Education Center
A light lunch will be available.
In dialogue with one another, James Alison and Richard Rohr help us understand what Jesus’ death and resurrection mean for us. Drawing from philosopher René Girard’s work, they free this familiar biblical story from unhelpful, toxic interpretations such as “sacrifice” and “atonement.”
See more here.

This conversation will be facilitated by Catherine Penn Williams, convener of Adult Spiritual Formation at GSP.
An Inquiry into "Healing the Heart of Democracy"
Sunday, August 21  at 9:00 am
in the Bloom Education Center
Using Parker Palmer's 2011 book Healing the Heart of Democracy we will examine the thesis that the human heart is the first home of democracy. It is where we embrace our questions: Can we be equitable? Can we be generous? Can we listen with our whole beings, not just our minds, and offer our attention rather than our opinions? And do we have enough resolve in our hearts to act courageously, relentlessly, without giving up - ever - trusting our fellow citizens to join with us in our determined pursuit of a living democracy?

Brian Arthur is a long time member of GSP and a member of the Adult Spiritual Formation ministry team. Brian was an active facilitator of Courage and Renewal programs from 2011-2015.
Islamic Art: Context
and Misconception
Sunday, August 28 at 9:00 am
in the Bloom Education Center
Does Islam really forbid artists to create naturalistic images of living beings? What are the primary forms of Islamic art? What are some of the regional differences in Islamic art? Most importantly, what is the relationship between religion and art in Islamic cultures? These are some of the questions that will be addressed in this class, which will feature slides of various examples of Islamic art forms.

Dr Vicki Stefani has taught writing, literature, and cultural studies at the  University of Arizona and Humboldt
State University.  She is a member of the ASF ministry team and convener of the Bible Women group at GSP. Vicki and her husband Joe have lived in Tucson for 24 years.

Play Reading & Movie @ GSP
Summer Film Series:
The Way of the Pilgrim
Friday, August 5 at 6:30 pm:
A play reading of "The Women" (1936) in the Bloom Education Center

Friday, August 19 at 6:30 pm:
A film and discussion of "The Women" (1939) in the Bloom Education Center

Our summer theme is “pilgrimage” and the many ways we might find ourselves on unexpected journeys—journeys that lead us to new ways of seeing and being in the world.

In August, the First Friday Play Reading and the Adult Spiritual Formation ministries are undertaking a joint venture, presenting both play and film versions of the same story, “The Women.” Written by Claire Booth Luce in 1936, the play was a big hit with audiences. The 1939 movie version that starred Norma Shearer, Joan Crawford and Rosalind Russell was wildly successful. The story reflects attitudes of an era in which it was assumed that a woman's only real satisfaction was marriage to a successful man. The females that inhabit this world are of all modes: sympathetic, overbearing, kind, catty, gossiping, innocent, egotistic. Some of the characters find themselves on unexpected journeys that lead to transformation in their lives. Please join us for one or both events!

Your hosts are Nanalee Raphael for the evening of theater on August 5 and Catherine Penn Williams for the evening of film on August 19.

in the Bloom Education Center

“This is your country, this is your world, this is your body, and you must find some way to live within the all of it.” In the profound Between the World and Me, Ta-Nehisi Coates offers a powerful new framework for understanding our nation’s history and current crisis. Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race,” a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men—bodies exploited through slavery and segregation, and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden?

“Powerful and passionate . . . profoundly moving . . . a searing meditation on what it means to be black in America today.” (Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times)

All are welcome. No registration necessary. For more information, please contact the church office at 327-6857.

Bible Women
Note: This group is taking a break during August and will resume on Friday, September 2 from 10:30-11:30 am in the Weeks Room

What do the voices of women in scripture have to say to us about our own lives, regardless of our gender? This class studies the Bible through the words of women in the Old and New Testaments. The focus is on actual scripture and its contexts; an optional text, Bible Women: All Their Words and Why They Matter by Lindsay Hardin Freeman is available through Amazon. The group meets twice a month on the 1st and 3rd Friday. No registration is necessary and participants are welcome to join the group at any time.
