"I love giving back to the community. The need is great, and the people incredibly generous in their sincere appreciation." -Ceres Volunteer
Every day, dozens of volunteers gather in Ceres kitchens and garden to grow and prepare food together, or they connect with our clients by phone, or hand them a bag of beautiful, delicious and nourishing meals, made and delivered with love.
Many of our volunteers tell us they receive more than they give as volunteers.
We all have a longing for purpose and community, and numerous studies show that feeling connected is an important contributor to health. Ceres is a container for all of us to experience and deepen those connections, no matter our age or background.
This month's newsletter celebrates some of those many connections. Read on to see the long list of volunteers celebrating their anniversaries of service, some for as long as eight and nine years. Thank you for all you do to help Ceres, and our communities, thrive!
And as we get ready to host our biggest fundraiser of the year on September 17, I'm thrilled to say we have more Harvest of the Heart sponsors than ever before. Thanks to these generous businesses, every dollar our guests spend on ticket and auction purchases will go directly to getting meals into the hands of the people who need them most, and to giving teens experience with healthy cooking and eating, plus job and leadership skills.
As Ceres continues to grow, there are more opportunities than ever to support our work. You can make a difference in our community--and in your own health--by volunteering, donating or attending an event or class. Thank you for being a part of the Ceres family.
In Gratitude,
Cathryn Couch
Executive Director

Gearing Up for Our Biggest Event of the Year
|
Harvest of the Heart is our most important fundraising event of the year, and it's all about celebrating what we can do together to sustain our neighbors, inspire local youth, and create a healthier, more caring and connected community. Sponsors underwrite all the event costs, so every dollar spent on tickets and at auction goes directly to our programs. Local businesses donate food, beverages and auction items and more than 100 volunteers of all ages donate hours of their time to insure that the event is successful. Each gives in their own way to make Harvest of the Heart a memorable and special event.
Our goal is to raise $225,000 to fund our programs in Alameda, Marin and Sonoma counties, nourishing local families facing a health crisis like cancer, and teaching teens about growing, cooking and enjoying healthy foods while discovering their capacity to serve and effect change in their community and the world.
Please join us in the Ceres Community Garden for an evening of food prepared by a gathering of the finest chefs in Sonoma County paired with some of the best wines and other beverages in the world, all served in the Ceres way-with warmth, generosity, and abundance of spirit!
You'll not only enjoy yourself thoroughly-you'll also help raise funds to support Ceres' clients and teens!

Quote from Our Client
|
__________________________________________________________
Client Liaison Greg shared these reflections from client Margi.
"Margi wishes it known that she is thrilled with the quality of the
food, the preparation that went into it, the presentation and most
of all... the love.
Little additions like the card written by one of the school children add a personal touch that lets her know people are thinking of her. Margi sent me an email about her experience:
'It was such a pleasure to open the food package and discover what
Earthly Delights can be created without sugar, animals fat and gluten!
All in all... a resounding success! Too bad the dessert was gone by
the second night!
Please let everyone involved know that their work is supremely
appreciated and we are sending the love back... along with clean
containers.'

Cheers"

Planting your Fall Garden
|
by Sara McCamant
Garden & Youth Program Manager
I know you can't believe it as you are just beginning to harvest the summer crops but it is time to start planting your fall garden. After years of small non-productive broccoli and cabbage, and miniature carrots in December, I finally realized I needed to start the fall garden sooner. Start cabbage, Brussels sprouts, broccoli and cauliflower now through early August. Sometimes I start a nursery bed of these plants in rich soil and then dig them up and transplant them to larger spacing when they are a few inches tall. Parsnips also need to be started now (they take a long time to germinate so be prepared to keep the seed bed moist for a couple of weeks). By early August I start thinking about fall carrots and beets and a new planting of chard or kale if I want more for the winter. Because the day length is so short in the fall months, most fall crops need to get established in August, though some like leafy greens can be started in September. Also think about doing a summer cover crop of buckwheat if you have a bed sitting empty. It grows really fast, is great for the bees, you can eat the young greens and it accumulates insoluble phosphorous and releases it in a more available form when it gets turned under.

|
Remember some plants will give you much higher yields if you keep them well harvested. Cucumbers, summer squash, beans and basil will keep on producing if you keep them harvested. If fruit is left on too long or flowers are allowed to develop on the basil, the plants move toward seed production and reproduction not production. Flowers will also have extended bloom if you keep them deadheaded.

Ceres Insider: Teen Movie Night & Marin Circle
|
Read on to learn what our Sebastopol, Santa Rosa and Marin teens have been up to this past month.
Teen Movie Night
On Friday, July 22, thirty Teen Gardeners and Chefs from Ceres' Santa Rosa and Sebastopol kitchens gathered to make dinner and watch a movie,
Ratatouille, together.
Events like this give teens a chance to deepen connections, spend time with other teens that they may not regularly volunteer with, and plan, prepare and share a meal together. Movies we typically screen deal with food system issues and the connections between food and health.
On the menu:
Ratatouille with eggplant & zucchini (from the Ceres' garden)
Polenta Purslane-cucumber salad; Green salad Gravenstein apple-blackberry galettes
Yum!

Teen Education Circle Debuts in San Rafael
Each teen shift at Ceres includes
a half-hour teen education circle, where we engage the teens about critical issues around nutrition, the global food system, and how to create a healthy community. The teen education program regularly covers:
-
Kitchen and gardening skills
-
How nutrition affects your health
-
Sustainable agriculture/hunger/how food choices affect health of planet
-
Team-building
-
Visits from clients
This month we had our first teen education circle in our San Rafael kitchen. Despite the challenges of limited space and time in this rented kitchen, our staff is committed to offering this vital part of the Youth program.
The first circle topic was sugar. Many of us don't think about the amount of sugar in our favorite drinks. We assume that because something is labeled as "healthy" we don't need to look at nutritional labels. Our teen circle included an interactive game where the teens guess how many sugar cubes they think are in some of their favorite drinks.
The teens had a lot of fun working as a group. The group overestimated the amount of sugar in the drinks, and one girl was especially disappointed to find out how much sugar was in her favorite Snapple.
