HBIDA Fall Symposium

Dr. Cheryl Ann Chase spoke on Executive Functioning at HBIDA's Fall Symposium, September 27, 2014. Her lecture, entitled, "Recognizing Weak Executive Functioning and Reducing Its Negative Impact on Learning and Performance,"was well-received by attendees. Comments included:

"Excellent presentation, now I understand terminology when I hear executive functioning skills.";

"Dr. Chase needs to make a film of her talk so more people can hear what she says!"; and

"Best presentation in the 22 years I've attended HBIDA events!!".

Gordon Doran (pictured above with his wife, Lori (right), and his children's therapist, Katie Blackwell (left)) shared his perspective as a child with dyslexia and how he overcame his reading difficulties to become a successful entrepreneur. Audience comments included:

"Wonderful to see his success in life and how his dyslexia was perceived in the past! Positive attitude!";

"You give all my students great encouragement!";

"Great to hear a personal success story!";

"I wish my students had been here to hear this powerful speaker!"; and

Leeann Rudolph, center, with, from left to right, Griselda Reyna, John Murtell, Kathy Edwards, and Jessica Harris, HBIDA Board President, received the 2014 Leadership in Literacy Award in recognition of exemplary leadership in education that encourages literacy, reading and student achievement. This award is given by the Houston Branch to individuals who have fostered literacy instruction and understanding of dyslexia in a school or school district. Leeann is Dyslexia Coordinator at Brazosport Independent School District, Freeport, Texas. Click here to read more about Leeann's work to support literacy in her community.

Former IDA board member, Jeffrey Gilger, Ph.D., and his team at the University of California-Merced have been conducting brain-imaging studies on the neurobiological processes in adults with dyslexia and in a subgroup who also are gifted in nonverbal-spatial abilities. Read more.
