Bookseller Recommendations!
Phyllis  Recommends:

  The Muse by Jessie Burton
Odelle, a Caribbean native scraping out a living in London in the 1960s, finds herself in the middle of an intrigue involving a mysterious piece of art.  Burton takes us back and forth between the origin of the painting in pre-war Spain and its dramatic entrance into the public eye at a posh British art gallery. Unique characters and unusual situations in both settings will keep you reading to understand the truth behind the layers of mystique surrounding the painting and the players involved in creating it. A fast paced and well developed literary thriller!

Peter Recommends:

Half Wild by Robin MacArthur
The stories in Robin MacArthur's debut story collection are set in the hilly backcountry of southern Vermont - a rural landscape of half-abandoned farms and run-down double-wides, but also of immense natural beauty and wildness. Her characters hew close to this land - even those who have left cannot help but return. These are beautifully drawn portraits of people who, despite poverty and decay, remain vibrantly alive to their world and to the power of memory. Many of these stories are deeply moving - I cannot wait to read more from this author!

Marilyn Recommends:

Valley Of The Moon by Melanie Gideon
Joseph is stuck in the early 1900s in Greengage (a sort of modern Brigadoon), and Lux is a young single mother of the 1970s who travels between the two times and places.  This is perfect summer reading with the fantasy of the time travel element, and there are beautiful, intelligent insights into relationships and cultures.  The flower clock information is great!

William Recommends:

Christodora by Tim Murphy
Spanning five decades and three generations of a family who live in the infamous building in the East Village, this is also the story of New York and America - in all its tarnished glory.  The cast of characters includes AIDS activists, artists, drug users, health workers, and even people who flee to (gasp) Los Angeles, but the family remains the core of the novel. The secret to this great book is the all-abiding love Murphy has for his characters and the redemption they more than earn.  The last fifty pages are among the most vibrant and touching finales I've ever read.

Dog of the Week
Phiz

Phiz is a three year old Boston Terrier/French Bulldog mix who loves taking walks to the bookstore so she can get her cookie!  The owner's daughter calls her Mercy Watson, because she steals buttered toast from the breakfast table.  We cannot believe that any dog with a face this innocent could ever steal toast!  Welcome to Wellesley Books, Phiz!
