Jon Urquhart
Director - Global Application Engineering
PVA

Jon Urquhart has been PVA's senior application engineer since 1993. Jon specializes in the processing of fluid materials in a production environment and is utilized by material manufacturers and end users alike to optimize their process and recommend efficient automated equipment and application solutions. Jon currently holds numerous patents for spray valve designs and coating machine configurations and is a renowned expert in the selective application of conformal coating materials with over 20 years of applicable experience.

David F. Duke
President

Stone Mountain Tool
David Duke earned his journeyman certification as a Tool & Die maker in 1978.  He has been working in the manufacturing industry for 44 years from assembly line welder to owner / operator of Stone Mountain Tool for the past 33 years. In 1984 Stone Mountain Tool started the design and build of wave solder pallets from hard coated aluminum. Spending considerable time in the assembly plants with the process engineers & technicians developing solutions for the wave solder process provided a thorough knowledge of the Printed Circuit Assembly process. Composite materials replaced aluminum and became the current standard. David is an expert in combining the knowledge of printed circuit assembly with the unique ability to effectively machine advanced composites. David designs and builds ESD safe composite PCA process tooling and has expanded his expertise to include advanced products for aqueous wash, conformal coating, underfill, rework, and more.

"A Candid Conversation About Cleaning"
This "conversation-style" presentation covers several popular cleaning-related subjects and provides answers to popular questions including:

  • Many of us haven't cleaned for more than twenty years. Why do we need to clean now?
  • How much assembly contamination is acceptable?
  • What's the true cost of cleaning?
  • How are most assemblers cleaning their assemblies?
  • Do I need a chemical to clean?
  • What's the environmental impact when I clean (am I solving one problem and creating another)?
  • Are there any alternatives to cleaning?
  • How clean is clean enough?

"Video Analysis of Solder Paste Release From Stencils"
Solder paste release from the stencil is a critical factor in print quality, and ultimately, overall electronic product quality and reliability. To better understand release mechanics, an experiment was devised using a video microscope to capture the separation of the stencil from the PCB. The experiment incorporates different aperture area ratios, solder pastes, stencil nanocoatings and underwipe solvents to visualize their effects on paste release. This study builds on previous research that developed the test setup and recording methods, and incorporates some modifications to the original experimental configuration to improve image quality. The outputs of the experiments are videos that demonstrate the effects of solder paste formulation, solvent under wiping and nanocoating on paste release at different area ratios. The paper will discuss the observations from the videos, and the presentation will play the videos.

"Modern Conformal Coating - Equipment Techniques, & Process Issues"
The conformal coating process has evolved greatly from the days of hand masking electronic assemblies and placing them into high pressure spray booths and dip tanks to apply the liquid coatings.  Machine developments have provided the ability to use multiple applicators, and sometimes multiple fluids, to meet the target result.   As the equipment became more sophisticated, so have the circuitry designs which has created tighter coating requirements and smaller process windows.  The fluids used for coating and masking have also developed and have enabled the use of new process techniques not typically employed in conformal coating.  Not all end users have the same requirements.  Defining the end goal of a conformal coating process and understanding the equipment capability with various application techniques will be discussed plus additional tips on identifying process issues.
