School Performance, Supports Focus of Retreat

The Board of Education returned from summer break today with a retreat focused on school performance and supports.  DPS is working to dramatically improve the quality of all of our schools, so that we can reach our most important goal: making sure there are great schools in every neighborhood . To reach this goal, we believe that schools need to be supported, evaluated and held accountable for their results.

When district-managed schools do not meet expectations for academic growth and achievement, DPS provides additional supports to help them get back on track. The Board today learned which schools have been identified through the Tiered Support Framework as needing "intensive" or "strategic" level supports, and what those specific supports look like for the 2016-17 school year. The Board was asked to consider whether school principals in these schools have what they need to improve the conditions for learning in their schools. Read the full presentation here.

The School Performance Compact outlines three aspects of school performance that will be considered in order to identify the most persistently low-performing schools that need to be restarted or closed. These include:
  • historical performance on the School Performance Framework,
  • academic growth in the most recent year and
  • overall instructional quality and learning culture measured by a School Quality Review.
The board was asked to provide guidance on what standards and performance levels should be considered in the School Quality Review when it is being used to determine whether a school is recommended for restart or closure. Read the full presentation here .

This policy helps DPS balance the urgent need to do right by our students with the understanding that change takes time. We make sure schools have the time and support they need to improve, while holding ourselves accountable for the success of every child.

Board members will meet Thursday, Aug. 4, for a Focus on Achievement study session followed by their monthly work session Aug. 15 and their monthly board meeting Aug. 18.
