Housing Levy

Ballots are due TOMORROW!

Our rapid growth is causing huge rent spikes, creating a severe shortage of affordable homes. Now more than ever, we need to provide for a future for our city's working families, young, seniors, and homeless.

The Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce suggests a YES on the 2016 Seattle Housing Levy in the August 2nd primary.

Office of Labor Standards Funding Proposal

The Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce  supports Mayor Ed Murray's  proposal to continue funding the Office of Labor Standards through the general fund, rather than a per-employee fee or head tax.

The Seattle City Council is still exploring the latter option, even though the Mayor's proposal shows that the City can readily pay for labor law implementation through the general fund.

It is essential for Councilmembers hearing from members of the business community about our support for the Mayor's proposal, which is vastly preferable to a new tax on businesses.

You can help: The Seattle Metro Chamber's letter-writing tool  makes it easy to contact your Councilmembers and urge them to support Mayor Murray's proposal: just enter your address, review the pre-written text and personalize it if you wish, then hit send.

Restrictive Scheduling

Working Washington, a coalition of labor organizations, announced its efforts earlier this year to pass legislation in Seattle that would regulate employee scheduling and hiring.

What's in the Ordinance?  A draft of the city's policy based on results of a commissioned study can be found here.  S eattle employers in the hospitality industry have voiced concerns about what a mandated restrictive policy could mean to their business and employees.  Tune into the Seattle Channel August 2nd at 9:30AM to watch a presentation of the latest draft of the legislation.

A majority of hospitality workers surveyed are satisfied with their schedules!  T he Seattle Restaurant Alliance released its own study indicating restaurant employees are satisfied with their schedules.  Read more about how this study compares with the city commissioned study  here.

Your input is needed!  Employers and workers, especially in the hospitality industry,  need to make sure their voices are heard. Email your concerns about restrictive scheduling to City Council Members  Lisa Herbold, Lorena Gonzales, and Kshama Sawant.  Visit the Seattle Restaurant Alliance Facebook Page and website for updates.

No On I-1515

Thank you, we did it!

Together, we defeated I-1515; an initiative that threatened to  takeaway Washington's non-discrimination protections for  transgender men and women.

The Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce is proud to have been an early supporter of Washington Won't Discriminate's campaign to protect Washington's non-discrimination  laws.

Capitol Hill Champion

The Capitol Hill Champion , a joint project of the Chamber and the Capitol Hill Community Council, advocates for the incorporation of community goals in the redevelopment on top of Sound Transit's Capitol Hill Station.

Update: Last week, the Sound Transit Board approved the sale of land adjacent to the Capitol Hill light rail station for affordable housing, to the developer of the station sites, Gerding Edlen.  Capitol Hill Housing will own and operate the affordable housing portion of the development.  The remaining leased properties are anticipated to go to vote next month.  Sign up for updates at [email protected].

Get involved! The Capitol Hill Champion seeks input from members of specific communities on Capitol Hill who may not have had as strong of a voice thus far in the design process. If you would like to participate in a focus group, please fill out an application .
