Fairs and festivals
The DIA takes its show on the road-literally-to fairs and festivals all over Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties. One way the museum provides a mobile experience is through DIA Away-an interactive classroom and exploration space housed in a 53-foot double-expandable trailer. Inside, visitors discover some of the ways artists think and then try out creative thinking skills at digital and hands-on stations. In addition to DIA Away, the museum sends studio staff artists to local events to provide art-making workshops for fair and festivalgoers of all ages.
 
Last year the DIA traveled to more than 50 fairs and festivals in the tri-county area, with more than 20 in Oakland County alone. August's warm weather makes this month a perfect time to be out and about. Come see us at these upcoming events in your county:

Lake Orion Senior Luncheon Series, Wednesdays, noon-1:30 p.m.  
The Orion Center, located at 1335 Joslyn Rd., is hosting a senior luncheon series featuring talks about the DIA's collection on Wednesdays from noon to 1:30 p.m. Guests will learn about various aspects of the DIA's collection over lunch. Each event is for people ages 50 and older and requires advance registration at least one week prior to the talk. Admission is $6. Call 248-391-0304 ext. 305 to register. Upcoming talks are:

Detroit Institute of Awesome!, every Saturday and Sunday
Saturdays and Sundays are even more kid friendly at the DIA. The museum has rolled out
Detroit Institute of Awesome!, featuring a variety of art and activities tailored to kids ages 3-10. Events are free for residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. Puppet performances by Detroit-based Interstate Art on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 6 and 7, and the Detroit Film Theatre Animation Club screenings of  The 90-Second Newbery Film Festival are highlights this month.  Learn more here .

Senior Thursdays, every Thursday at 1 p.m. 
This DIA program offers tri-county seniors the opportunity to visit the museum and enjoy programs planned exclusively for them, at no cost, every Thursday. The first Thursday of each month features a guided gallery tour; the second a lecture; the third an art-making class; and the fourth a film. During months with five Thursdays, the fifth Thursday will feature a guided gallery tour. All programs will begin at 1 p.m. The August schedule is:
  • August 4: Gallery tour: Highlights of the permanent collection 
  • August 11: Lecture cancelled due to Fash Bash®
  • August 18: Art-making: Watercolor postcards
  • August 25: Film: Diplomacy

The Inside|Out summer 2016 season has officially begun! More than 90 reproductions have been installed in nine tri-county communities and will be on view through October.
