Free Rain Barrel Workshop with UF/IFAS Miami-Dade County Extension Service. Come learn how harvesting rain water can help reduce pollution from stormwater runoff and provide a supply of free, non-chlorinated, pH-neutral water for your vegetable garden, prize orchids, potted plants and much more! The workshop is free to attend and recycled plastic 60-gallon food-grade drums (rain barrels) are available for purchase at $40.00 each.. Register here

Free Art in the Park with Marie- childrens art camp under the banyan tree.  Marie Kolbert is a licensed pre-school teacher in her home country of Sweden, where she has been involved in arts her whole life. All are welcome to attend art camp under the shade of our Banyan tree. 
Sunday, July 31st, 2016, 10 AM- 1 PM. Calligraphy Workshop with Hernan Helfer from the Miami Paper Museum.  Learn traditional strokes and techniques for elegant letter making projects, with the lush botanical garden as your backdrop. Every Saturday 10 AM-12 noon. Free Compost Corral- Community drop off time. Save your food scraps (fruit/veggies, eggshells, coffee grounds, organic material) with the intention of contributing to our pile! Join us for weekly compost discussions as we develop a compost community here in Miami Beach. Fall Program:  coming to the garden soon.

Oil palms

What do we know about oil palms? Well, oil palms are collectively a group of palm trees consisting of two separate genus and a large number of speciesthe total number of species changes so regularly, that any quantification (70, 80 or 90) would be obsolete with the next publication. The two genus of oil palms are Attalea of Central and South America and Elaeis—one species being from a similar distribution as Attalea and the other species native to West and Southwest Africa. Both species of Elaeis are good producers of oil, but one species is grown on a massive scale—to the detriment of nature and ultimately us. Continue reading here
