NSU Law Hosts Global Law Education
Conference
NSU Law's International Consortium for Global Legal Education presented its first annual
Global Law Education Conference on July 18-21, 2016 at the Huizenga College of Business and Entrepreneurship. Twenty- three law professors from the Bahamas, England, Jamaica, India, Lebanon, Trinidad and Tobago attended this faculty training workshop. The sessions focused on active learning methodologies, including the National Institute for Trial Advocacy's "Learning by Doing" methodology, experiential learning and teaching, collaborative learning techniques, and the use of rubrics.

Second Annual Trial Advocacy Summer Institute (TASI)
August 9-13, 2016 | NSU College of Law
The NSU Trial Association is proud to host the Second Annual
Trial Advocacy Summer Institute (TASI) August 9 - 13, 2016 at NSU College of Law. TASI is a five day course taught by NSU Law faculty and members of our litigation community. Students will practice oral advocacy, trial skills, while learning how to: (1) deliver opening statements and closing arguments, (2) conduct direct and cross examinations, and (3) apply basic evidence law in a trial setting.
Local attorneys and judges with extensive trial experience will serve as faculty members from Tuesday to Friday, and act as evaluators and judges on Saturday afternoon for the students' final trials. Fore more information on this event, contact Professor Megan Chaney at

The Honorable Louis Schiff of the 17th Judicial Circuit will present a CLE lecture based on
Baseball and the Law: Cases and Materials, a book he co-authored with NSU Law professor Robert Jarvis.

Mentoring Program 2016 - 2017
The NSU Law Mentoring Program begins again this fall. Mentors and Mentees are invited to participate in group mentoring and events throughout the academic year. Unlike the traditional 1:1 mentoring models often used, the NSU Law Mentoring Program uses a group mentoring model organized by practice area. Mentees (2L and above) can meet Mentors who practice in an area of the law that interests them. A list of suggested activities by group helps Mentors and Mentees schedule meetings for learning, observing Mentors in court or at the office, and networking opportunities. A special program for 1Ls to introduce them to the program for the following academic year will be held February 24, 2017. Networking breakfasts for Mentors and Mentees include interactive learning presentations during the fall and winter semesters at NSU Shepard Broad College of Law. |

October 13-15, 2016
NITA's "learning by doing" program enables you to explore and master best practices in both taking and defending depositions. Practice and perfect your skills and learn to handle ethical issues that arise during depositions and while preparing witnesses. Elena Langan, associate dean of academic affairs and professor of law, will become Dean of Concordia University School of Law in Boise, Idaho effective January 2017. Her unwavering commitment to NSU Law began as director of Legal Research & Writing (then LSV) in 2007, followed by her role as interim dean during the 2013-2014 academic year. Prior to joining NSU Law, Langan practiced law for 25 years, primarily in Miami-Dade County.

Professor
Debra Moss Curtis has been chosen as the new associate dean of academic affairs at NSU Law and will begin her new role in January 2017. Curtis' prior experience as director of public interest law at NSU proves her capability to thrive in such administrative duties. She currently teaches Sales, Secured Transactions, and Sales Financing, and serves on several committees at NSU Law. Curtis has been active in The Florida Bar, playing a major role as one of four Chairs of "Vision 2016" the Bar's comprehensive three year study of the future of the legal profession.

Accepting Applications for Fall 2016
Launched in April 2016, the
Legal Incubator Program at NSU Law enables recent alumni to start their own solo, small firm, or non-profit practice. In fact, through opportunities afforded to her through the program, alumna
Chaya Posner is the first participant to successfully launch her own solo practice.
The NSU Legal Incubator Program is unique in that it is the first legal incubator program in the country that specifically targets the veteran population. The post-graduate program operates through the Veterans Law Clinic under the direction of staff attorney Jayme Cassidy. Registration to join the Legal Incubator Program is now open. Applicants must be recent NSU Law graduates and members of the Florida Bar. For a full list of requirements, visit the incubator webpage. |

Director of Alumni Relations to Assume New Role
Elena Rose Minicucci
, (JD 1996) director of alumni relations at NSU Law since 2011, will assume a full-time teaching position in the NSU Law
Critical Skills Program
effective August 8, 2016. Minicucci has been an adjunct professor at NSU Law since 2002 where she taught various skills courses. As a critical skills instructor, she will focus on teaching students to develop the essential skills needed to excel in law school, pass the bar exam, and succeed in the practice of law. Before joining NSU Law full time, Minicucci practiced law for sixteen years in South Florida working as a litigation attorney for the Florida Office of the Attorney General, a litigator and transaction attorney for the City of Hollywood, FL, and City of Sunrise, FL, and in private practice. Legal Research and Writing Department Represents NSU Law at National Conference
The Legal Research and Writing department traveled to the Legal Writing Institute's national conference in Portland, Oregon. Joe Hynllka and Camille Lamar presented, Incorporating Social Justice into the LRW Classroom. Camille Lamar and Heather Baxter presented, The Critiquing Workshop. Heather Baxter presented, Teaching Workshop: Challenges and Strategies for Changing Times. Jane Cross presented, Easing the Burn: A Focus on Wellness for the Legal Writing Professor. Olympia Duhart presented at a plenary session on Improving and Protecting LRW Status on Law School Faculties, and presented a teaching doctrinal class, It is a Win-Win: How LRW Methods Can Improve the Doctrinal Classroom.

Professor Michael Flynn accepted an offer of publication for his latest article,
You Know, It's Just Marketing -- Unfair and Deceptive Trade Practices in Car Dealer Buy Back Offers, to be published at University of Dayton Law Review (2017).
Dean Jon M. Garon accepted an offer of publication for his latest article, The Once and Future Profession: Autonomy, Intellectualism, and Obligation, to be published in 48 Toledo Law Review (Feb. 2017) as part of the biannual Dean's Edition. A copy of the working paper is available here.
Professor Areto Imoukhuede accepted an offer of publication for his latest article,
Gun Rights and the New Lochnerism, to be published at 47 Seton Hall Law Review Jan. 2017). Professor Imoukhuede was recognized with the lead article for the volume.

NSU Law Student Crowned Miss Florida USA
NSU Shepard Broad College of Law student
Linette De Los Santos was recently crowned
Miss Florida USA 2017. Approximately 70 young women representing all areas of Florida competed for this prestigious title. The four day Miss Florida USA pageant, held at Parker Playhouse in Fort Lauderdale, FL, involves interview, swimsuit, evening gown, and final rounds. Linette takes the place of Brie Gabrielle, winner of Miss Florida USA 2016 and will compete for the title of Miss USA in 2017. If crowned Miss USA she will compete for the chance to be crowned Miss Universe. Linette is currently a 2L at NSU Law and is a member of the Association of Business Law Students. She plans to become a successful practicing attorney in Florida.
