Alamo Colleges Graduates 81 Local Workers from Technical Training Pilot Program
Alcoa employee and graduate Juan Hernandez was one of the speakers at the Alamo Colleges Technical Institute graduation.

At a graduation ceremony July 27, 81 employees from local businesses celebrated their completion of the Alamo Colleges Technical Institute (ACTI) mechatronics pilot program, a partnership effort between Alamo Colleges and Workforce Solutions Alamo. Both the employees and their employers were so impressed with the pilot program that additional classes will be offered to allow more local companies to participate. 

These manufacturing classes are for incumbent workers who need to expand their skills and remain competitive in the ever-changing economy. The ACTI programs provide time-efficient and economical training for future journeymen, electricians, technicians and certified tradesmen.

Alamo Colleges - Palo Alto College Supports Hispanic Students Seeking STEM Careers
PAC is using federal grant funds to operate a special project
to support Hispanic students preparing for STEM careers.

Alamo Colleges - Palo Alto College PAC) is dedicated to helping Hispanic students not only succeed but thrive in south San Antonio, and a unique grant has helped these students work toward careers in fields where minorities often are underrepresented-STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

The College's HSI-STEM CAARE (Coaching, Active-learning, Advising, Research and Endowment) project makes use of a U.S. Department of Education grant to give in-need Hispanic students the support, preparation and education needed to transfer to a four-year school and graduate with a degree in STEM. 

Many STEM program enhancements will live on past the life of the grant, such as the expanded botanical garden used for hands-on learning and the rigorus advising program that helps ensure students graduate on time and with a goal in mind.

Throughout the life of the grant, the overall percentage of STEM degrees and certificates given by the College has increased, and CAARE Grant Project Director Angela Menke is confident the grant has helped set up PAC for continued STEM success.

SAC's William R. Sinkin Eco Centro has two solar-powered Electronic Vehicle charging stations available to the public.

Alamo Colleges - San Antonio College Sinkin Eco Centro Offers Free Electric Car Charging

At Alamo Colleges - San Antonio Colleges' William R. Sinkin Eco Centro, San Antonio's abundant sunshine is being turned into fuel for electric cars. Eco Centro has two Electronic Vehicle (EV) charging stations on their parking lot available to the public. The EV charging stations are solar powered - getting energy from a renewable source that is off the grid. And best of all, the EV charging stations are free to use.

Each EV charging station can connect to two vehicles at the same time. According to Steven Lewis, director of the Sinkin Eco Centro, the community center has the only two solar powered EV chargers in San Antonio. "We encourage members of our community to adopt environmentally friendly transportation options, and offering community members free vehicle charges is one way to get that message across," Lewis explains.

Expansion of the solar energy supply feeding the charging stations will grow late this year with the addition of a carport with 39 solar panels that will shade the charging area.
