Vincent van Gogh Inspired Art

Be sure to visit the Mystic and Noank Library until  August 27th to contribute to or simply enjoy our participatory art exhibit inspired by Vincent van Gogh's sunflower series. He painted this series while living in Arles, France in 1888.

Children and adults of all ages are welcome to add their artistic talent to the collaborative exhibit.

Visit the MN&L sunflower garden out back. Learn about van Gogh from the library books in the Ames room. Create your own flower forms and add them to the wall!

The display is open to the public during regular library hours when the room is not in use. Supplies will be provided. Thanks for contributing!

Events & Happenings... This Month!
Sub Century Story Walk at Mystic River Park
Monday August 1 -  Monday, September 5

In honor of the centennial anniversary of the U.S. Naval Submarine Base, the M&NL is pleased to announce this year's StoryWalk® installation, Super Submarines, by Tony Mitton.

StoryWalk® encourages both family literacy and physical activity by posting pages from a children's picture book along a path or walking trail or in a park. Families walk along the park, reading a page at a time together, interacting with the story and with each other.

The StoryWalk will be at Mystic River Park from August 1st through Labor Day. Come and celebrate Connecticut's Submarine Century with us! Enjoy this book every day, rain or shine!
A Talk about a Walk

Their show is truly one not to be missed.

The Artist's Garden:
American Impressionism and the Garden Movement, 1887-1920
Thursday, August 18 at 1:00 p.m.

The Florence Griswold Museum is currently showing a remarkable exhibition, "The Artist's Garden: American Impressionism and the Garden Movement, 1887-1920" on view through September 18th.

The museum's Assistant Curator, Jenny Parsons, will give a presentation surveying highlights from the exhibition. At the turn of the 20th century, the canvases of American artists burst to life with the colors and textures of the gardens they saw around them. This new trend in art began in the 1880s as the principles of Impressionism spread beyond France.

The American Impressionists' attraction to flowers and gardens can be understood as an extension of the Garden Movement. This national movement had special resonance in Connecticut, where particular women played important roles in both the garden and Progressive political realms.

Networking--It's Not What You Know, It's Who You Know
Monday, August 22 at 7:00 p.m.

They say that it's not what you know, it's who you know, and that is true, but expanding who you know is all a matter of networking. Michael Whitehouse moved to Groton in 2014 knowing no one in Southeast Connecticut. Two years later, he has regular contact with business owners, mayors, legislators and others.

He did this by applying some basic networking concepts that he will teach you during this powerful and informative workshop. Attendees are encouraged to participate in the discussion. Think about what you are trying to achieve through networking, and Michael will discuss specific networking strategies to reach your personal goals.
