SVCC Boards Recognize Virginia  Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission

New Chair of the Southside Virginia Community College Local Board
Jeffrey C. Scales is the new Chair of the Southside Virginia Community College Local Board, having presided over his first  meeting
on July 13, 2016. Currently the principal of Cumberland High School (his alma mater), he has been involved in education also as a teacher, athletic director, and
assistant principal for more than 19 years.
A veteran, he served in the Virginia National Guard for two years and U.S. Army from 1984 to 1990. He is a graduate of James Madison University (B.A.) Virginia State University (M.A.), Liberty University, (Ed. S.) and is pursuing his Ed.D. from Liberty University.
Verghese  Award Presented
Lauren Upton was a recent recipient of the K. George Verghese Memorial Academic Merit Award. Dr. Verghese was a long time faculty member at SVCC and was instrumental in the establishment of the Registered Nursing and Practical Nursing Programs. SVCC Machining Skills Program Approved
SVCC's Machining Skills Certification Program was approved as an Army Career Skills Program, the first of its kind approved at Fort Lee.  The Army Career Skills Program approval means that all transitioning service members of any branch, are able to engage training programs 6-months from the actual separation date. Under this program, service members should be eligible for Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) benefits.

STEM Camp Held
The Christanna Campus of Southside Virginia Community College hosted students from Brunswick County at STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Camp in July.   Students utilized their STEM skills for real life situations, such as purifying water in the wilderness.
