Meet the New PCL Director!

The PCL Board has appointed Jeffrey Cannell, MLS, as its new Library Director. Jeff joined PCL earlier this month and is based at Rochambeau Library. He will bring strategic vision to PCL, act as chief spokesperson and advocate of the Library at city, state and national levels and lead the organization's 65 staff.

Jeff joins PCL from the New York State Education Department, where he was Deputy Commissioner of Cultural Education, supervising the statewide distribution of $150 million in local assistance to libraries, library systems and archival organizations, as well as the coordination of cultural and educational programming initiatives across New York State. Prior to that, he served as Director of Albany Public Library, where he applied creativity and new ideas to the management of a main library, five branches, and a bookmobile. Jeff acquired earlier experience in library management at public libraries in North Carolina and at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.

Jeff has been getting to know his staff, library and new city and is excited to be part of PCL. "I'm a passionate believer that libraries change lives and I am here to help PCL succeed," he says. Welcome, Jeff!

Thanks For Coming, Mayor Elorza!

Mayor Jorge Elorza paid a visit to Washington Park Library's summer reading program kickoff party on June 30. The Mayor told the delighted children that he read every single day, owned 1,000 books and had read almost all of them! Reading 20 minutes a day helps children to avoid the "summer slide" - a gradual loss of reading and numeracy skills which typically happens over the summer - and PCL's Summer Reading Program makes the process fun and rewarding.  The PCL Summer Reading Program is now in full swing. Click on the "Summer Reading 2016" tab on our website to see what's happening!

POKEMON ALERT: Sightings in Libraries on the Increase: Trainers Needed

Pokemons have been reported at several PCL locations. Rochambeau is a designated PokeStop and there's a rumor that we might have a Gym in our midst! Trainers are welcome to enter libraries during opening hours and capture Pokemon but please be mindful of patrons who may be blissfully unaware of the creatures. For the uninitiated, the excitement is all to do with a game played on smartphone devices called Pokemon GO, which has taken the gaming world by storm!

Coming Soon - PCL Lovecraft Week

It's H.P. Lovecraft's 126th birthday on August 20 and PCL will be celebrating with a special Lovecraft Week!  On August 22 at Rochambeau, 7:00PM-8:30PM, Paul Di Filippo will talk about Lovecraft's fascination with Providence and Rhode Island and how the writer incorporated his love of Lil Rhody into his fantastic fiction. At Knight Memorial Library, Lovecraft Meets Minecraft returns for children and teens aged 7-18.  The challenge? Create a chilling, spooky or weird image in Minecraft based on a brief quotation from one of H.P. Lovecraft's works, or a Lovecraft-influenced picture as supplied by librarians. Kids may work on computers in any library or at home to build creations and entries will be accepted August 15-20. The winners will be announced August 22.

For more information about Lovecraft Meets Minecraft, contact Allison Riendeau [email protected]. Check the PCL calendar for all Lovecraft Week events, which include creepy crafts, spooky story times and horror movie double bills.
Make a Purchase at Blue State Coffee and Vote for PCL!

Those nice people at Blue State Coffee, 300 Thayer Street have
selected Providence Community Library as a supported non-profit organization! Every six months, Blue State Coffee at 300 Thayer Street chooses four local non-profit organizations to support in the store, based on customer suggestions. Customers are presented with a token each time they make a purchase and they use it to vote for one of four selected non-profits. Voting will take place July-December 2016 and the organization awarded the most tokens during that time will receive the equivalent of 2 percent of the store's sales over the six month period.

So when you're on the East Side, grab a coffee at 300 Thayer Street (that's the branch by the Post Office, not the one in the Brown bookstore) and vote for PCL! Every vote counts!
