Marie Equi: Radical Politics and Outlaw Passions
August 6th, 3 pm
Downtown Eugene Public Library at 10th & Olive
Michael Helquist will give a talk about the fiercely independent, extraordinary life of Oregonian Marie Equi - and about why, though she was famous in her time, you may not recognize her name.
Born of Italian-Irish parents in 1872, Marie Equi endured childhood labor in a gritty Massachusetts textile mill before fleeing to an Oregon homestead with her first longtime woman companion. She self-studied her way into a San Francisco medical school and then obtained her license in Portland to become one of the first practicing woman physicians in the Pacific Northwest. From Pendleton, Portland, Seattle and beyond to Boston and San Francisco, she leveraged her professional status to fight for women's suffrage, labor rights, and reproductive freedom. She mounted soapboxes, fought with police, and spent a night in jail with birth control advocate Margaret Sanger. Equi's protests against the U.S. entry into World War I led to a conviction for sedition and a three-year sentence in San Quentin. Breaking boundaries in all facets of life, she became the first well-known lesbian in Oregon, and her same-sex affairs figured prominently in a U.S. Supreme Court case.
Helquist is the author of the biography "Marie Equi: Radical Politics and Outlaw Passions," which was named a 2016 Stonewall Honor Book by the American Library Association. Finely written and rigorously researched, it engages anyone interested in Pacific Northwest history, women's studies, the history of lesbian and gay rights, and the personal demands of political activism. It is the inspiring story of a singular woman who was not afraid to take risks, who refused to compromise her principles in the face of enormous opposition and adversity, and who paid a steep personal price for living by her convictions.

Mims House at 330 High Street in Eugene
Groundbreaking in focus and depth, the new multimedia exhibition "
Giving Back: The Soul of Philanthropy Reframed and Exhibited" features inspirational images and stories of generosity among Americans of African descent. 20 black-and- white photographs and narratives provide insight to centuries-old cultural customs and beliefs about giving and generosity that-though rarely referred to as "philanthropy" in Black communities-have long been an integral and transformational force in lives and communities throughout American society.
About the Historic Mims House Memorial Monument
- MRG Foundation is excited to partner with the
NAACP Eugene/ Springfield to host the reception at the
Historic Mims House. The Mims House is a cornerstone to the Black community in Eugene and has been for almost 70 years. In the 1940's racist exclusionary laws in Eugene established a practice that prohibited African-Americans from residing within the Eugene city limits. In 1948, under the name of his sympathetic employer Joe Earley (Osborn Hotel owner), C.B. and Annie D. Mims purchased 330 & 336 High Street property. The Mims' houses became both home and boarding houses for other African-Americans seeking to settle or passing through Eugene as other accommodation were invariably "white-only." These houses were also home to many Black U of O students who also had difficulty finding residences in Eugene. In the 1980s a group of activists successfully applied for national restoration funds and both houses were restored and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
