Vintage Vault Rarities,
Thursday, July 21 at 7pm:
You're invited to take a glimpse into the NHF archives with
a special program curated by Liz Coffey, Film Conservator, Harvard Library's Media Preservation Services.

There have been upwards of a hundred years' worth of films made in Maine and northern New England, and Northeast Historic Film has preserved more than a few gems. Many of the greatest of these films show two sides of a coin - work and play. Maine industries were documented in beautiful detail by amateurs and professionals alike, and other filmmakers pointed their cameras at Vacationland escapades. For this screening, we are pleased to show some of the lesser-known hits of NHF's unparalleled collection.
The Good Kettle Wine Tasting
The Good Kettle Wine Tasting is Thursday, July 21 from 5:00PM to 7:00PM. Featuring selected fine wines from Central Distributers to benefit the Waldo County Humane Society.

From Stump to Ship: A 1930 Logging Film
At the Alamo
From Stump to Ship: A 1930 Logging Film

Saturday, July 23 at 4pm
A famous film made by Alfred Ames, president of the Machias Lumber Company in Washington County, Maine. Ames not only documented his family business, but he also created a cinematic record of the pre-industrial lumber industry.

In 1985, Maine Humanities Council and the University of Maine awarded grant funds to Karan Sheldon and David Weiss, who went on to found Northeast Historic Film, to preserve this important film. Additional support was provided by Champion International Paper Company. Ames' script was recorded by Tim Sample, a Maine native, humorist, and professional narrator.

Nearly eight thousand people viewed the film over a five-month period. From Stump to Ship was exhibited as part of the Maine Humanities Council presentations in Orono and Portland and twenty small towns across Maine from October 1985 through March 1986. Eight hundred people, for example, viewed From Stump to Ship in the town of Machias-a staggering number considering the population hovers near 2,000.

Please join us for both events and help us celebrate the 30th anniversary of Northeast Historic Film. Events are free and open to everyone. Donations are most gratefully accepted.

Northeast Historic Film - Screening New England  17th Annual NHF Summer Symposium
Thursday, July 21-Saturday, July 23, 2016  at the Alamo Theatre, 85 Main Street - Bucksport!

This year's gathering will explore New England's dramatic scenery, local crafts and industries, and hardy and photogenic peoples in films from the beginnings of cinema in 1895 forward. Members of the public will join film scholars, students, film buffs, and technical specialists in celebrating New England's rich film history and the Alamo's role in that story. Many presentations include film from NHF's celebrated archival collections.

"Treasures from the Archives," a special opening night screening of early 20th Century films from the NHF collection curated by Liz Coffey of the Harvard Film Archive, kicks off the symposium.

USDOL's New Overtime Rules
How USDOL's New Overtime Rules Apply in Maine
Maine statutes incorporate by reference the salary requirements under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA); therefore, the sections pertaining to any salary increase under the new federal overtime rules will be effective December 1.

The FLSA has "enterprise and individual coverages" to determine whether a business is subject to the law; however, Maine labor laws do not have such thresholds. Any business operating in the state with one employee is automatically covered by state law. This includes all public and private employers regardless of profit or size.

Employers need to review both federal and state labor laws on each particular exemption to determine applicability. Some exemptions are allowed under federal law but our state law prohibits the exemption or does not address it.

The Maine Department of Labor will be bringing forth both statutory and rules changes to better align the laws and provide clarity for workers and employers. We will provide notice as we recommend changes to the state regulations
