WEEKLY PROGRESS REPORT:
Praise and Plagiarism

Throughout the televised National Republican Convention this week, Trump delegates are full of praise for their candidate. However, the convention has not been without the drama for which Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is well known.

On the first day of the convention, there was a delegate walk-out over an attempt to change the rules. Presumably, the delegates later returned to the convention, despite their loss. Since then, the Republican National Committee (RNC) has demonstrated an interesting way of dealing with protesters. Republican organizers gather round and cover the person's face while others drape an American flag between the protester and the camera. Then the protester disappears.

The RNC has had a difficult time getting people to speak at the Republican Convention. Some Republicans don't want to be associated with Donald Trump, so much so, that they aren't even attending the convention. Senator Lindsey Graham (R.SC) didn't mince any words on the subject. He informed Time Magazine, "I... cannot in good conscience support Donald Trump because I do not believe he is a reliable Republican conservative, nor has he displayed the judgment and temperament to serve as commander in chief." Who would have thought we would agree with Senator Graham!

As of June 30, 2016, the following Republicans had announced that they were skipping the Republican Convention altogether:

· Senator Kelly Ayotte (R.NH)
· Senator Roy Blunt (R.MO)
· Senator Richard Burr (R.NC)
· Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush
· Former U.S. President George W. Bush
· Former Governor Jeb Bush (R.FL)
· Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R.UT)
· Senator Jeff Flake (R.AZ)
· Rep. Trey Gowdy (R.SC)
· Senator Lindsey Graham (R.SC)
· Senator Ron Johnson (R.WS)
· Senator Mark Kirk (R.IL)
· Rep. Mia Love (R.UT)
· 2008 GOP Presidential Nominee John McCain (R.AZ)
· Governor Matthew Mead (R.WY)
· Senator Jerry Moran (R.KS)
· Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R.SC)
· Senator Lisa Murkowski (R.AL)
· 2012 GOP Presidential Nominee Mitt Romney (R.MA)
· Governor Brian Sandoval (R.NV)
· Senator Ben Sasse (R.NE)
· Rep. Elise Stefanik (R.NY)

Generally, parties try to put their best foot forward during a convention. However, halfway through the Republican Convention, not one, but two scandals erupted. First, after fierce denials, the Trump campaign was forced to admit that the speechwriters for Melania Trump had plagiarized Michelle Obama's 2008 convention speech. Second, Tony Schwartz, the ghostwriter of Trump's book "The Art of the Deal" announced his remorse in making Trump look better than he was. In his words, "I put lipstick on a pig."

At the time of the writing of this article, Donald Trump has not yet accepted the role as the Republican presidential nominee but, of course, he will accept. Then, next week, it will be our turn, and we will be proud. Tune in to WFAA-8 TV this Sunday morning. Your Dallas County Democratic Party Chair will participate in a live interview on "Inside Politics" to discuss the upcoming National Democratic Convention.
