Pentecost no bkgrnd

July 21, 2016 Emmanuel's E-News
Greetings from
Emmanuel Episcopal Church!

This Sunday is the Tenth Sunday after Pentecost.

Rev. Ellen will celebrate and preach.

We look forward to seeing you in church!

The Sundays after Pentecost

As on most Sundays during "Ordinary Time," the longest season of the church year, vestments and altar cloth are green, the color of growth and life.

Wednesday Healing and Anointing Service

As Rev. Ellen is on vacation for the first half of July and then will be working at the Diocese for the latter part of July, the Wednesday Eucharist will be cancelled for July.

Morning Prayer may be read by Jim and Sue Beyer if you wish to join them. Otherwise, normal services will be resumed in August. Thank you.
Community Outreach
QuinnJuly Outreach at the Quinn Center

On Friday evening, July 22, we will be helping with the Quinn Center's annual "end of the summer program" BBQ and celebration.  Emmanuel will be helping to set up the tables, helping with games and providing dessert.

If you are interested in helping out, please contact Penny Longo at (708) 354-7947.  It should be a fun evening of fellowship!

A Note From Gabriel Lara, Director, Quinn Community Center of St. Eulalia

To all the volunteers from Emmanuel who have so generously supported the Quinn Center:

I would like to invite you to our annual End-of-Summer Community Celebration, which we will be hosting on Friday, July 22nd from 6-8pm. We want to take this time to acknowledge the campers, their families, and the community that makes this endeavor possible. Please see the attached flyer for all the details.

It is hard to believe that this will mark the end of the Quinn Center's 5th Summer Program. We have seen incredible growth over the years, and we have been blessed to work with wonderful community volunteers and partner organizations along the way. This year we welcomed over 140 youth to the Center, including an entire classroom of 4- and 5-year olds. Our 30 teen mentors not only worked at the camp but also had the opportunity to give presentations about health disparities through the Loyola ASPIRE program.

As we celebrate these accomplishments, let us remember where we started: a small group of dedicated teens saw a need for affordable summer programming for their community. They had the brave and somewhat audacious idea that they could make a difference. May we all believe that we too can be that change.
Please check your calendars for the following events:

Friday, July 22nd, is the annual BBQ at the Quinn Center. I am looking for some teenagers who would be willing to help run games for the children at the event from 6-8 p.m. The church will provide all the games and supplies.
Youth

On Saturday, July 23rd, there will be a Deanery-wide youth event at St. Helena's in Burr Ridge. This is open to all youth in Grades 6-12 as well as adult chaperones and leaders. It runs from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and will include fun, food, and music. We already have several middle school youth interested, so Emmanuel will definitely have a group going.

If you would like to RSVP or would like additional information, please let me know at [email protected].

Also, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church (Downers Grove) is running a Vacation Bible School (VBS) at the end of July for children Age 4 up through 5th Grade. It will be July 25-29, from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Their program will study the water stories of the Bible and reflect on how "God is with me wherever I go".

If you are interested, please let me know and I will provide you with the contact information for that church.

Thanks, and have a great week! -Dave Jackson

antiques2017 Planning Session

Please reserve the evening of Monday, August 15 th at 7:30 p.m. for our next Antique & Vintage Market planning session that will be led by Reverend Ellen.  We will be making some very important decisions at this meeting pertaining to the Antique & Vintage market in 2017.

As we discussed at our last meeting together, it is vital that these chair and committee positions are staffed in advance of kicking off this event as the planning takes almost 9 months to complete.  Because we are not meeting until August 15 th, everyone will have time to think about what role, if any, to play in next year's event.

All parishioners are welcome to attend... including our teens.

Please consider making your pledge payments by means of an automatic draft from your bank account.  Cash flow is always difficult, especially in the summer months, and an automatic deduction ensures that your pledge is made even when you are unable to be in church.

Thank you very much for considering this.

Young artists will have a blast making friends, learning art-tricks, and honing technical skills. Studio classes will begin with warm-up "inspiration" activities, brainstorming, and preparing materials.  Each day will offer a new, exciting project and focus on generating fresh ideas in one's own individual style.

Saint of the Week:
Mary Magdalene, First Witness of the Resurrection

22 July NT

Mary Magdalene is mentioned in the Gospels as being among the women of Galilee who followed Jesus and His disciples, and who was present at His Crucifixion and Burial, and who went to the tomb on Easter Sunday to anoint His body. She was the first to see the Risen Lord, and to announce His Resurrection to the apostles. Accordingly, she is referred to in early Christian writings as "the apostle to the apostles."

Mary Magdalene, Mary of Bethany (sister of Martha and Lazarus), and the unnamed penitent woman who anointed Jesus's feet (Luke 7:36-48) are sometimes supposed to be the same woman. From this, plus the statement that Jesus had cast seven demons out of her (Luke 8:2), has risen the tradition that she had been a prostitute before she met Jesus.

Because of the assumption that Mary Magdalene had been a spectacular sinner, and also perhaps because she is described as weeping at the tomb of Jesus on the Resurrection morning, she is often portrayed in art as weeping, or with eyes red from having wept. From this appearance we derive the English word "maudlin", meaning "effusively or tearfully sentimental." There is a Magdalen College at Oxford, and a Magdalene College at Cambridge (different spelling), both pronounced "Maudlin."
