Excitement and interest in AIM Photonics successful week of events  at SEMICON West!
Members and representatives from AIM Photonics presented various topics at SEMICON West's Advanced Packaging forum and Flexible Hybrid Electronics Manufacturing forum.

Topics ranged from manufacturing challenges for photonics integrated circuits and how AIM Photonics plans to address those challenges, to the increase in IP traffic growth driving adoption of Si Photonics, to the rapidly growing market of integrated photonic sensors.

Dr. Kaushik Patel, Cisco Director of Engineering, noted that IP traffic will increase 3X in just the next few years, and that the average smartphone user currently consumes more data in less than a minute, than a mobile user did in an entire month 5 years ago. This continues to drive optical port density and Band Width per port.

With this growth, the cost of Silicon Photonics based solution is critical for wide scale adoption.  Dr. Patel stressed that Industry must use the “CMOS model” to drive down the cost of Silicon Photonics.

Dr. Benjamin Miller, AIM Photonics Academic Lead, Sensors Key Technology Manufacturing Areas (KTMA), and Professor, University of Rochester Medical Center, discussed the large and rapidly growing market for integrated photonics sensors; a market projected to be $21B by 2020.  AIM Photonics sensors KTMA are addressing the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of integrated photonics sensors.

The last day, AIM Photonics Chief Marketing Officer, Frank Tolic, spoke of the process challenges and how AIM Photonics will address two critical high risk items of any technology venture, time and money.

With support of federal and local governments, universities, and industry, AIM Photonics creates a unique low risk entry model for small to medium photonics companies looking to leverage next generation technology.

This model will not only enable smaller companies but will accelerate photonic technology and workforce development in just 5 years time, something difficult for a large or small company to accomplish alone.

Speaker presentations can be found on the AIM Photonics website and SUNY Poly SEMICON West 2016 page

Upcoming Events
The AIM Photonics Northeast Supply Conference (NESCO) will be held October 19, 8:30–5:30 at the Hyatt Regency in Rochester, NY, in conjunction with Frontiers in Optics technical conference during The Optical Society’s Centennial year celebration.  AIM Photonics and its members will also be exhibiting October 19-20 at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center.

Photonics NESCO will provide a stage for established photonics supply chain companies, new and emerging innovators, industry leaders, strategic investors, and venture capitalists to discuss the needs and requirements of the industry’s future growth.

Participants will gain insights into technology, capital, partnership, workforce development, and collaboration strategies necessary for mutual success throughout the photonics community. Event details and registration coming soon.

Technical Conference:   17 – 21 Oct.  2016
Exhibition:  19 – 20 Oct.  2016

Rochester Riverside Convention Center
Rochester, New York, US
Members and representatives of AIM Photonics will be speaking and participating in technology and business programs at SEMICON Europa 2016, October 25-27 at the Alpexo Center, Grenoble, France.

The largest microelectronics event in Europe. SEMICON Europa addresses the critical issues and challenges facing the microelectronics industries.

AIM Photonics representatives and members will be exhibiting with other National Network for Manufacturing Innovation institutes during The Defense Manufacturing Conference (DMC) 2016 in Denver Colorado.

DMC is the nation’s largest annual forum for enhancing and leveraging the efforts of scientists, engineers, managers, technology leaders and policy makers across the defense manufacturing industrial base.

It brings together leaders from government, industry, and academia to exchange perspectives and information about critical Department of Defense industrial base policies, sector analyses and manufacturing technology programs for the production and sustainment of affordable defense systems.

New DOE SBIR Program
On July 18, the U.S. Department of Energy issued the FY 2017 Topics for its Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Program.  Of potential interest to Members of AIM Photonics and others in the photonics industry is a topic that seeks a collaborative team of small businesses to design, fabricate, build, and test a photonic Memory Controller Module that will facilitate the development of next generation leadership class supercomputers.

More information on the SBIR and STTR Program and the specific topic can be found here:
