"Narcissistic" has become an overly-used, non-specific label in contemporary culture assigned to the dating or relationship partner who is experienced as selfish, grandiose and critical of others.  

But pathological narcissism is a much more insidious and problematic personality dynamic that makes the achievement of an intimate relationship with another person practically impossible.  Being romantically involved with a true narcissist can be especially frustrating, emotionally painful and often bewildering.
