Making Solar Power More Affordable

Last week, Mayor Kriseman, Council Member Darden Rice, the League of Women Voters, and community leaders from St. Petersburg stood on the steps of City Hall to announce their support for Florida Solar United Neighborhoods and solar co-ops.

FL SUN expands access to solar by educating Floridians about the benefits of distributed solar energy, helping them organize group solar installations, and strengthening Florida's solar policies and its community of solar supporters.

Tampa Bay Times: Website ranks St. Petersburg, Tampa as top 'pet friendly' cities in the U.S.

A new ranking by the real estate site Zumper calls St. Petersburg the most pet friendly city in the country, with Tampa following closely behind.

The ranking calculated scores for 95 American cities in three categories: ease of owning a pet, places to play and the number of home rental listings that allow animals.

"St. Petersburg topped our ranks of pet friendly cities due largely to the fact that it was in the top 10 percent of cities with cat friendly listings," the website wrote. "St. Petersburg also scored very well in the ease of owning a pet category because of the high density of veterinarians, pet stores and pet restaurants in the area."

Anne Lindberg SPB: St. Pete receives grant to help update climate action plan

St. Petersburg has received a $20,000 grant from the Urban Land Institute to help refine the city's climate action plan to help handle coastal vulnerabilities and the threat of sea level rise.

The grant comes from the ULI's Urban Resilience Program, which enhances the long-term sustainability and livability of communities by helping them better withstand the detrimental impacts of climate change, including the ability to quickly and safely recover from severe weather-related events.

Keystone Crossroads: On the first day of DNC, mayors ask for better urban policies

In a discussion on the first day of the Democratic National Convention seven mayors from six states agreed that there's a disconnect between local governments and their state and federal counterparts.

More than 80 percent of the U.S. population lives in urban areas, yet only three paragraphs of the Democratic platform, a 55-page document, are dedicated to building stronger cities and metro areas, said Will Marshall, president of the Progressive Policy Institute.

The police department accepted a challenge from Hot 101.5 to dance to the popular "Running Man Challenge." These officers show they can have some fun, laughs, and some are pretty talented dancers.

They even recruited some kids in the community to do the dance with them, as well as a police K-9, Mayor Rick Kriseman, and Tampa Bay Rays mascots.

PETA: St. Petersburg Helps Shut Down the Puppy Mill Pipeline

A recently approved ordinance in St. Petersburg, Florida, packs a one-two punch for animals: It bans pet stores from selling dogs and cats obtained from notoriously cruel mass-breeding factories (aka puppy mills and catteries), where animals are typically crammed into filthy wire-bottomed cages and deprived of love, attention, exercise, veterinary care, and everything else they need to be happy and healthy. The ordinance also gives homeless animals who are waiting to be adopted a better chance at finding loving homes by stipulating that only animals from shelters or rescue groups may be offered for adoption at pet stores.
