The 2016-2017 school year theme for all St. Croix Lutheran Association schools is "Hope Sure, Anchor Secure," based on Hebrews 6:19a: "We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure."

When students come back to campus in late August, they will immediately notice change.

Aside from a few cosmetic changes (new chapel windows, a  new front walk, light pole banners, updated bathroom and locker room, improved hallway lighting), students will be introduced to two new faculty members and some new class offerings including a STEM Capstone class (more about that below). Other changes include an expanded Learning Resource Center space, new MS classes, new service projects, and so much more!

One thing will not change, and it is the most important thing. Our anchor, God's word found in the Bible, will be shared on a daily basis in order to assure that everyone can receive the hope and promise of eternal life.

I hope you will join us for our opening service on Tuesday, August 30 (why is it on a Tuesday? see below), and witness some of the wonderful changes taking place at SCL.

Enjoy the rest of your summer!

Blessings,

Todd Russ
SCL President

Welcome New Faculty

Grey Davis is a new dormitory supervisor and HS world history instructor. He is originally from the Wausau/Lake Mills area and graduated from Lakeside Lutheran in 2012. Grey graduated from MLC this year with a degree in Secondary Social Studies. Along with social studies, he is passionate about athletics and physical fitness. Grey shared, "I am very excited and honored to be a part of the SCL family. Before call day, I was dreaming of a mission-type of call where I could not only use my gifts inside the classroom through social studies, but I wanted to be able to share the good news of our Savior to students who have maybe never been taught about the sacrifice he made on the cross for our lives." He hopes to help out with coaching as well!

Erin (Schmeling) Bohl is our new adjunct instructor. She will teach middle school language arts and will work in the LRC. Erin is a 2011 SCL graduate and a 2016 MLC graduate with a degree in Early Childhood Education. She is married to Ryan, and the couple lives in Oakdale. In addition to her duties at SCL, Erin works part-time at Cornerstone Early Learning Center in Hugo (part of Christ Lutheran Church), and Ryan is employed by Energy Management Collaborate as an assistant controller. She enjoys staying active outdoors, sporting events, and traveling. Erin reflects, "Having family members work at SCL in the past and numerous cousins and siblings attend school here, SCL has been part of my life for as long as I can remember. I can't help but smile in seeing God's hand at work for me to be a teacher here. I couldn't be more excited to learn from them again and work alongside them."

New STEM Class for Seniors
The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) program at SCL was adopted in the high school in 2012 with the first course, Principles of Engineering. Since then, two more courses have been added, Introduction to Engineering and Design and Computer Science and Software Engineering. This year, Mrs. Leanne Stob, SCL's STEM coordinator, has added another class, STEM Capstone, to serve students who have completed all previous STEM coursework. Stob stated, "There was a need for continuing coursework for seniors who started STEM as freshmen. They deserve it." The two-semester class will study architect design, LEGO robotics, and aerospace engineering. So far seven students have been accepted into the class which requires students to complete an application.
AP English Course Added
The English department is adding a new college-level course, AP English Language and Composition. The course is being taught by Mrs. Erin Hulse and focuses on reading and writing nonfiction at a college level. Students wishing to take the course must test into it.
Summer Camp Recap
SCL is in the midst of summer academic and athletic camps, and so far, it has been a great experience! The summer English Language camp welcomed 98 students from eight countries worldwide. Most of these students are not already enrolled at SCL and experiencing America for the first time. In addition to gaining English speaking and writing practice, many of these students are being introduced to Christ during daily morning devotion.

Our popular athletic, art, and science camps welcomed 73 new students from the local community and many more WELS/ELS elementary students. Find out more about SCL summer camps at StCroixLutheran.org/camps.
Class of '62-'69 Reunion
Class of 1962
First graduates in 1962.
SCL is excited to welcome back 1962-1969 graduates and former students (those who may have graduated from another school) on Friday, August 12 in the SCL commons. These students are SCL's founders and include the first members of the basketball, baseball, and cheerleading teams; the Croixaliers; and the band. So far, 47 alumni are planning to attend. Find out more at StCroixLutheran.org/60sReunion
New Friends
For people with special needs, making friends and having social interactions can be challenging. New Friends at SCL provides a fun, safe, and welcoming environment where people with special needs spend an enjoyable afternoon interacting with encouraging high school students. The next New Friends event is on Sunday, August 14 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. in the SCL gym. Find out more about New Friends at www.StCroixNewFriends.org.
Fall Sports Begin
Save the Date - Homecoming
Save the date for the SCL homecoming football game on Friday, September 30 versus the Fridley Tigers. We are hoping for a huge crowd to cheer on the Crusaders! The game is preceded by a parade down Oakdale Avenue, hot dogs and drinks at the concession stand, and giveaways for alumni. Area elementary students compete during half-time with a kick, pass, and spike competition.
International Friends
Each year, SCL welcomes over 100 international students from over 15 countries around the world. Some who come for the first time have never been to the United States and may find it challenging to understand American culture, which is oftentimes very different from their own.

International Friends is a two-fold ministry. On one hand, SCL families and friends are given a short-term ministry opportunity to open their homes and show hospitality to a new international student. On the other hand, new international students are given the rich opportunity of being immersed for a short-time in an American family.

The first International Friends weekend is October 14-16, 2016 . Find out m ore and sign up at  StCroixLutheran.org/IF or contact Sue Galler at (651) 455-1521 ext. 118.
