TRANSPORTATION NEWS: Track Safe Surge on Red Line This Week,
Parking Restrictions along Colesville Road and Georgia Avenue

Beginning this morning, Metro Red Line trains will continuously single track between Takoma and Silver Spring , resulting in major disruptions throughout the entire Red Line until late Sunday, August 7, when the current "Safe Track" surge is completed. Metro expects service reductions by: one-half between Glenmont and Silver Spring; three-quarters between Silver Spring and NoMa; and  one-quarter between NoMa and Grosvenor-Strathmore. This surge affects the second highest number of passengers of all WMATA surges.

WMATA has urged  Red Line passengers to seek alternate transportation, telework, ride at off-peak hours, or consider using the Green/Yellow Line as an alternative. Montgomery County Department of Transportation MCDOT will provide free Ride On "Red Line Shuttles" between the Silver Spring, Takoma, and Fort Totten Metro stations, and is extending peak-hour shuttle service to 4 1/2 hours in both the morning and afternoon to help ease congestion.

In order to increase road capacity on major commuter routes during the surge, MCDOT has temporarily prohibited all parking on Georgia Avenue (from Spring Street to the D.C. line) and Colesville Road (from Spring Street to Colesville Road) from 5 a.m. today until 8 p.m. on Friday. On Friday, GSSCC notified all members and other businesses along these routes.  Meters will be bagged indicating "No Parking 5 AM - 8 PM." Violators will be towed to a location nearby in the Silver Spring Central Business District. Parking will be available nights and weekends.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE - Your Chamber Working for Your Business

Proposed Ban on Temporary Signs
GSSCC has submitted a letter to the Montgomery County Council in advance of the public hearing, to oppose ZTA 16-06 , which would prohibit all non-permanent signs in public rights-of-way and specify enforcement procedures for illegal signs in rights-of-way. Based on input from GSSCC members, this measure would be problematic for residential realtors and other businesses that rely on posting signs in neighborhoods or sidewalks. Here is a link to the letter GSSCC sent. A public hearing on this bill is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 2. At last check, the witness list was full, but concerned members should write to the Council at [email protected] .
