Church of the Holy Comforter Special Announcement | July 20, 2016
We Have An Interim Rector!!
The Reverend Dr. Lyndon C. Shakespeare

Lyndon Shakespeare will begin his ministry with Holy Comforter in early September as the Interim Rector. In this role, Lyndon will be among us as a priest and pastor, and assist the parish and staff in the season of transition before a new rector is called. He has extensive experience working with communities as they discern a future together. Prior to Holy Comforter, Lyndon served as interim at St. Anselm's, Shoreham, NY; St. Francis, Great Falls, VA; and St. Paul's, K Street.

Beginning in 2011 and serving for two years, Lyndon was Director of Program and Ministry at Washington National Cathedral where he provided leadership for the Cathedral's educational, formational, and public dialog programs. In this role, he shaped and developed programs with specific focus on the engagement of faith and public life, Christian growth and formation, and interfaith dialog. He was also an active participant in Cathedral activities beyond his leadership and pastoral duties with respect to the Cathedral congregation and larger Cathedral community.

A native of Australia, Lyndon originally traveled to the United States in order to pursue a degree in psychology. He graduated from Wheaton College in Illinois in 1995 and worked in the field of mental health in Kansas City before entering the process for ordination. He and his family moved to Alexandria, Virginia, in 1999 where he began his studies at Virginia Theological Seminary. His first cure was as Assistant to the Rector at Christ Church, Georgetown.

A dedicated scholar-priest, Lyndon received his PhD in 2015 from Archbishop Justin Welby at a ceremony in Lambeth Palace. From 2009 to 2014, he studied as a member of the Archbishop's Examination in Theology under The Rev'd Andrew Davison, PhD (University of Cambridge). Cascade Books is publishing his dissertation with the title: Being the Body of Christ in the Age of Management. Lyndon is an active writer and speaker on topics ranging from Christian understandings of the human person to questions on the role of leadership and management in the church. He is the chair of the Society of Scholar-Priests.

Lyndon is married to Amie Flowers (a native of Indiana), and they are blessed with three children, Xavier (19), Madeleine (16), and Aidan (14). As will become evident at some point, Lyndon loves good coffee, Australian Rugby League, and time with family and friends. He also has an inclination towards micro-brew beers and well-written works of theology.

Lyndon will be residing in Rodman House, but has graciously agreed to allow us to continue to use the ground floor for church activities.

His first weekend at Holy Comforter will be September 9 through 11 at the parish retreat at Shrine Mont.
