Come Celebrate on August 1st
|
Join us to celebrate Maria Mitchell's 198th birthday on
August 1st from 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM. This is a
FREE family, adult, and child-friendly event with live period music, falconry demonstrations, a science expo, and refreshments.
All MMA sites will be open on Vestal Street and
the Aquarium on Washington Street. There will be a free Open Night at Loines Observatory at 9:00 PM on the 1st. Stop by for the party!

Astronomy Intern Research Presentations
|
|
WHAT: Sponsored by the National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates (NSF-REU), the Astronomy Interns will be presenting their summer research projects.

2. Members-Only Open Night
|
Calling all members! On
August 9th, we will be holding another Members-Only Open Night! Our Open Nights are held at Loines Observatory (59 Milk Street) at 9pm. Come join our professional astronomers and interns for an impressive tour of the starry sky and telescopic viewing of the planets from our two domes.
Special treats will be served.

The MMA's new 15' Whaler needs a name! We use the boat for research on scallops, eelgrass, and harbor biodiversity. Stop by the Aquarium and tell us your most creative name, or Tweet it to us using the hashtag #nametheboat

4. Tour a NOAA Research Vessel
|
On Wednesday,
August 17th, MMA Members will have the chance to tour a NOAA research vessel. Learn how fish data is collected and gain hands-on experiences using state-of-the-art technology. The vessel will be open from 2 PM - 4 PM.

5. Astronaut at the Dreamland
|
The Maria Mitchell Association and the Dreamland Theater will be co-sponsoring NASA Astronaut Andrew Feustel on Friday,
August 12th at 6:30 PM. Astronaut Feustel will
present a family friendly multimedia presentation about his experience as an astronaut. Tickets are available here.

Massachusetts state law requires both reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and preparation for the unavoidable impacts of global warming. Now, nearly two hundred countries have signed a legally binding pact to address climate change. How do the plans compare? And what are the chances they’ll succeed?

|
Dr. Annette Govindarajan will review the ecology and invasion history of the Clinging jellyfish Gonionemus vertens. New sightings and associated sting reports suggest a second invasion wave originating from the more toxic western Pacific populations.

The Community Foundation for Nantucket's ReMain Nantucket Fund, the Maria Mitchell Association will be operating a FREE shuttle on Friday nights from downtown Nantucket to Loines Observatory beginning June 17th.
