Sie
mpelkamp is one of our most distant honorees at the World Forestry Center. He is a lifelong resident of Krefield, Germany, a city not far from Dusseldorf. His birth year in 1933 coincided with the 50th anniversary of his grandfather's founding of the Siempelkamp Company. His own father was by that time already in his 15th year as president of the company, a position he would hold for more than 50 years. Dieter himself joined the company in 1958.

Having spent time abroad in his early years, his fluency in English made him a perfect international sales ambassador. He succeeded his father as president in 1970 and led it into a period of great expansion as it became a global leader in the design and construction of equipment and factories for the wood products and building materials industries.
The company's original focus had been the construction of hydraulic presses for a variety of industries, including those involved in the gluing and drying of veneers and the smoothing of paper. Under Dieter's leadership, it extended its activities to the building of complete manufacturing plants, especially for the particleboard and fiberboard industries. Revenues increased from $36 million in 1970 to nearly $500 million by the year 2000. Over the years, Mr. Siempelkamp remained in close contact with key customers around the globe, a key strategy for maintaining and expanding the range of his customers beyond Europe. He was also the guiding spirit behind the Siempelkamp Company's pursuit of innovation, always stressing the importance of developing new and environmentally friendly products.
Not content to restrict his creative business and engineering efforts to his own company, Dieter served on innumerable boards and trade commissions. He received a Distinguished Service Cross award for his work as an honorary judge of the Regional Court of Krefield. In 1994 he became committee chairman of the German Working Machinery Manufacturers Association, where he promoted the training of apprentices in the wood industry. He also played a decisive role in the development of Ligna into the world's top trade fair for the forestry and wood industries. He served as chairman of the board here at the World Forestry Center from 2001 to 2003, retiring from management of his company in that latter year.

WFI Alumni Update
WFI Alumnus Gabriel Salako (Nigerian Fellow, 2011) is getting published! While a Fellow at WFI, Gabriel studied Pacific Northwest conifer species that could be used to establish plantations in a region with similar climatic conditions in Nigeria called the Mambilla Plateau. Since Nigeria does not currently have a robust conifer market, Gabriel hopes that the establishment of plantations will encourage growth in the use of softwood lumber. His research, titled "Modeling the suitability index of selected conifers on Mambilla Plateau Taraba State, Nigeria: implication on planted forest" was recently accepted for publication in the peer-reviewed journal
International Journal of Agroforestry Remote Sensing and GIS.
Gabriel will be returning later this year to visit Oregon State University and present his research to collaborators before defending his final PhD thesis in Nigeria early next year. We wish him the best of luck and a very hearty congratulations!
We are also happy to report that another alumnus, Cristhian Gutierrez from Bolivia (2012), has been accepted into a PhD program at the University of Chicago. He will return to the US to continue his education and no doubt do great things for Bolivia in the future.

The World Forestry Center hosted forest industry and investment professionals at its annual
Who Will Own the Forest?
and Forest Products Forum conferences in September. Co-organized by the World Forest Institute and Forest Economic Advisors, the Forest Products Forum featured experts from Forest Economic Advisors as well as guest speakers discussing wood products markets. Around 100 attendees attended the Forum, with many also attending the following Who Will Own the Forest? event.
Over 400 leaders in the forestland, investment, conservation and advisory sectors gathered for the 11th annual
Who Will Own the Forest? conference. This series on institutional timberland investing featured 48 speakers in a wide-ranging agenda that also featured two World Forest Institute alumni: John Turland (New Zealand) spoke about Asia-Pacific plantations on behalf of RISI, and Ke Dong (China), representing The Nature Conservancy - China, joined a panel discussion on ESG concerns with timberland portfolios. Other topics covered the outlook on timber, timber vs. wood alternatives, regional valuation trends, institutional investor concerns, the forest financing landscape, inventory technology, seedling advances, investing in carbon offsets and other ecosystem services, cultivating the next generation of timberland managers, and updates on overseas investing in South America, Asia, Oceania, and the bio-fuels market.

Forests Inside Out Youth Education Program
For the past two years the US Forest Service has supported our Forests Inside Out program which takes 400
under-served
youth on a two-day forest adventure. The students met with USFS Rangers and hiked in the Columbia River Gorge. We empowered eight local high school students to mentor the participants. This year's program was a huge success.

The World Forestry Center, The Nature Conservancy, and the Pinchot Institute will hold a public lecture reporting on the UN Climate Change Conference being held in Paris, France from November 30 - December 11. Dr. Steven Running was a chapter Lead Author for the 4th Assessment of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change that shared the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. He received his M.S. in Forest Management at OSU and his Ph.D. in Forest Ecophysiology at CSU (Colorado).
He is now a Regents Professor of Forest Ecology at the University of Montana, where he has been since 1979.
Dr. Running will be "on the ground" at the World Forestry Center while the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is taking place in Paris. He
will talk about the latest climate negotiations and the specific role global forests have in the Earth climate system.
