July Maintenance Guidelines

After years of working in the industry and building a nursery business around Oklahoma's inclement weather, we are suggesting the following maintenance guidelines:

* See Marcum's Nursery watering guidelines for plantings, trees, and shrubs.

* Look for webworms and bagworms. If found, apply Hi-Yield 55% Malathion or Thuricide.

Apply Marcum's Slow Release 18-6-12 fertilizer to warm-season grasses if water is present for growth.

* Don't forget to mulch. Choose from our many choices of premium mulches.

* Apply preventative white grub  Hi-Yield Grub Free Zone II  from late June to mid-July to control mole crickets.

* The hotter and drier it gets, the larger the spider mite populations become! Spray plant foliage with Hi-Yield 55% Malathion Spray or Natural Guard Insecticidal Soap

New This Week!
Beaked Yucca
This newly arrived yucca is perfect for Oklahoma landscapes! It prefers mostly sun and very little shade. It handles extreme heat and cold temps and prefers rocky, well-drained soil without organic matter. Its showy, creamy-white flower stalks bloom in late spring and throughout the summer.
Featured Tree
The Desert Willow blooms all summer long. Their large pink trumpet-like flowers usually make their debut in July. These drought tolerant trees are becoming more and more popular in our Oklahoma landscapes.
Featured Annual
Caladium
Grown exclusively for their bold and colorful foliage, caladiums prefer the afternoon shade. Great nestled under shade trees and used as points of interest in flowerbeds. Needs occasional watering. Choose from our many varieties!

Chump's Chatter

Webworms are small masses of ____ that have formed webs in many of our Oklahoma trees.

Webs can be seen in many of our hickory, persimmon, sweetgum, willow, redbud, and oaks, but they especially prefer our _____ trees.

Webworms are feeding on the ____ of the tree.

Dahlia's Answers: Caterpillars, pecan trees, leaves

Dahlia's Dirt!

Webworms have made their debut in Oklahoma due to the unusual amount of rainfall this past couple of months.

According to the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service, Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at Oklahoma State University, each female can lay 400 to 500 eggs in masses on the underside of leaves. Two races or forms of the larvae occur in Oklahoma.

Larvae may be pale yellow, yellowish green, greenish, or orange, but most have two rows of black spots down the back. The head may be red or black. The body is rather sparsely covered with long white hairs.

Damage is caused by the larvae feeding on the leaves. For webworm treatment, Marcum's Nursery recommends  Hi-Yield's Malathion, Thuricide (Bt), Spinosad, or Carbaryl, a.k.a. Sevin.

Learn more about webworms by reading OSU's Division of ASNR's article.

Fresh Blackberry Dumplings

Fresh Blackberries
It's blackberry season! Every year around the 4th of July, the brier patch calls my name. My friend Debbie and I take off to the fields in a flat-bed truck for some serious blackberry picking. Thorns and chiggers can't keep us away.

This month I'm sharing my Aunt Ramona's recipe. She makes her recipe from Bisquick's dumplings.   Enjoy the taste of summer!
