A Service of Service

It gets bigger every year--FEED THE WORLD SUNDAY! On Sunday August 28, at 10 AM, after a brief gathering in the sanctuary, we will disperse around the building to serve our neighbors. Individuals and entire families will be able to make a difference by feeding people locally, nationally, and globally. At Maple Grove we truly are an open community of Christians who love and serve our neighbors.

Feed the World Sunday - August 28

Opportunities include:
* Working in the church's community garden
* Packing at least 200 sack lunches for Pastors Pantry, shared with neighbors through CRC
* Preparing hundreds of sandwiches for Faith on 8th shelter
* Packaging food for up to 7500 meals distributed around the world by Lifeline Christian Mission
* Pack "buddy bags" for children to take home from school on weekends
* Preparing dishes for CRC's annual community picnic
* Writing letters to public officials about hunger-related issues
* Preparing food for all those serving that day

At about 11:00 we will all sit down and eat together.
There will be an 8:30 worship service as usual.

And later ... The CRC's community cookout is also August 28, from 1 - 5:00 PM at Antrim Park. Have an early lunch, and then an early dinner over at Antrim--wear your Maple Grove shirt and enjoy some great community spirit!
Continuing our Love Our Neighbor Lecture and Luncheon Series
This lecture series continues on Sunday, August 21 @ 11:15 AM  to explore the challenge of living in a diverse world and the opportunity to make a Christian choice to love our neighbor.

At our August 21 Reconciling Ministries event an inter-generational panel will speak openly and honestly about the challenge of participating in the life of church as an LGBTQ person or an LGBTQ ally.

We encourage you to come with a desire to grow in understanding what it means to be a reconciling church where all gifts and talents are welcomed!

The Reconciling Ministries Network (RMN) is an organization dedicated to the inclusion of people   of all sexual orientations and gender identities in both the policy and practices of United Methodist Church.
Because we believe we can love alike, even though we may not think alike.

Youth Memphis Mission Trip Recap
by Cathy Davis

Thirteen of us left on July 9th for a week long mission trip to Memphis. It was another remarkable trip. The Second Baptist church graciously provided a great space for us stay while we were there.

On this trip we had the privilege of worshiping with The Monument of Love Baptist Church on Sunday morning. During that service, the Rev Joyce passionately shared the pain and grief this African American congregation felt after another week of racial violence. Rev Joyce just as passionately preached a message to end violence and not make each other into the enemy, but to trust in the peace and healing power of God's great love. Read all the details of our adventures.

Make a Walk with Christ!
Be sponsored by your friends at Maple Grove.  "It is hard to believe that it has been over 20 years since I made my Cum Christo weekend. It was a turning point in my spiritual journey. My Cum Christo sponsor told me to just go and trust. She also said that she had never known the personal love of God until that weekend. That is why it was a turning point for me. I felt the personal love of Jesus Christ and began a true personal relationship with him. Go and trust!" Sue Pohler

A growing number of people at Maple Grove have been blessed by a weekend community experience with Christ, and we invite you to prayerfully consider making a Walk to Emmaus or a Cum Christo weekend. Below are descriptions of Cum Christo and Emmaus, along with dates of their upcoming weekends.

Cum Christo is a Lay Renewal Movement which brings Christians together in an ecumenical three-day Spiritual Renewal Weekend to deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ and to motivate them to persevere, to live authentic Christian lives, and to grow as servant-leaders of Jesus in their churches and many environments.
Men's weekend: September 15-18
Women's weekend: October 13-16

The Walk to Emmaus is an experience of Christian spiritual renewal and formation that begins witha three-day short course in Christianity. It is an opportunity to meet Jesus Christ in a new way as God's grace and love is revealed to you through other believers. In the Emmaus community, each participant's individual gifts and servant-leadership skills are developed for use in the local church and its mission and participants are encouraged to find ways to live out their individual call to discipleship in their home, church, and community.
Men's Walk: August 11-14
Women's Walk: November 10-13
Talk with any of these Cum Christo and Emmaus weekend alums from Maple Grove: Sue Pohler, Jon and Marialice Bennett, Bill and Monica Tenney, Beth and Doug Morgan, Alison Gill, Sherri Scholl, Jane and Stew Rantz or Cathy Davis.

If you have already made a walk - please contact the church office and let us know so that we can add you to our list.

New Stephen Ministry Class
September 24

A new Stephen Ministry class begins on Saturday, September 24 - do you want to be in it?  Over the course of 5 months Stephen Ministry trainees will meet 9 times to learn the Stephen Ministry model of caregiving.

Since 1975 more than 600,000 men and women from all walks of life have trained and served as Stephen Ministers in their congregations. Most decide to become Stephen Ministers as a way to help hurting people in their congregation and community-but very quickly discover that God gives them amazing blessings in return.

Prayerfully consider participating in the training to learn caregiving and relationship skills and at the end of the training discern with the Stephen leaders your call to be a Stephen Minister.
Please contact Stephen Ministry Leaders Nancy Gay at 614-267-6418, Jane Rantz at 614-436-1812 or Cathy Davis at 614-262-1163 if you wish to participate in the training or if you would like to receive the care of a Stephen Minister.

"Your presence is worth much, much more than words. Your presence communicates to the other that he or she is valued, precious, beloved. Your presence brings not only the gift of yourself into the relationship but also, in and through you, the gift of God."

American Heart Association Heart Walk
August 27

A message from Maple Grove Member, Lana Runkle:
Hello Church Family! As many of you know, my husband was diagnosed with a rare heart condition called ARVC. We have felt the love over, and over again from all you continuing to pray, and having us in your thoughts. On August 27, another Columbus resident with ARVC and I will be hosting a Team for the American Heart Association Walk. Josh and I had the opportunity to meet a couple Columbus residents with ARVC at a seminar at Johns Hopkins, and it helped us not feel so alien! I ask that you consider either participating in the walk (there is a 1 mile option or a 3 mile option), or that you donate monetarily to the American Heart Association. The AHA does not JUST study ARVC, that means if you know ANYONE with: cardiomyopathy, congenital defects, valve issues, cardiovascular disease, heart attacks, you are supporting a very worthy cause! Josh was just accepted as one of 12 pre-med students to work with a large grant (partially funded by the American Heart Association) to teach CPR to the public in conjunction with OSU's Wexner Medical Center, the hospital that saved his life. Right before the race, Josh will be teaching CPR for free to the public, so if you want to learn, or just brush up on your skills, you could join us for that activity as well. If you are able, I ask that you support our Team: ARVC with Sole, either in spirit, prayer, monetarily, or with your (awesome) physical presence. To participate, you do not have to donate any money at all. You have the ability to donate, or sign up for the walk on our team website.
