OSHA Fines to Rise 78% Starting August 1st

The Labor Department announced recently that, as a result of Congressional action last year, it will  raise by 78% the maximum penalties it can impose for violations of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules.

The changes affect penalties assessed after Aug. 1 for violations that occurred after Nov. 2, 2015. They are contained in an interim final rule that will be published soon in the Federal Register. The 78% hike implements changes required by Congress' passage last November of the Federal Civil Penalties Inflation Adjustment Act.  As reported by Remodeling in February that law required agencies to publish "catch up" rules regarding the penalties they impose so that the penalties no longer lose their financial sting because of inflation. For instance, OSHA's maximum penalties haven't changed since 1990.

Take Action this Summer:
Meet with Your Lawmakers over the Congressional Recess

Take action over the seven-week congressional break by meeting with your Members of Congress in the communities they represent. The Republican and Democratic National Conventions have added two weeks to the traditional summer recess. Both the Senate and House left Washington, D.C. on July 15 and will not return until after Labor Day on September 6.
Now is a great time to contact your local House and Senate offices and invite them to tour your lumberyard. NLBMDA staff and BMSA are happy to help in providing you with the tools you need to engage your elected officials during the extended break.
When you do make your appointments make sure to let NLBMDA know, and after the meeting please send your pictures to [email protected] . Click here to read more.
