Tyler Bertuzzi - "We Grow Our Family Even More" at TC Development Camp

The first of the annual DRW Events in TC of 2016 - Detroit Red Wings Development Camp - took place for the sixth time on July 6-10. Fans attended practice sessions and scrimmages at Centre Ice Arena.

One of this year's seasoned attendees, Tyler Bertuzzi - a 2013 draft pick who plays left wing for the Grand Rapids Griffins - agreed to speak with On Ice and share his thoughts on attending the annual camp in Traverse City. This year marked Bertuzzi's fourth year attending and he was pegged as a leader, a role he embraced to the fullest.

OI-In what ways has your past experience during Development Camp in Traverse City shaped the type of player you've become?

TB-"For me, I think my first year I was a little bit nervous and I was watching the vets and all the development and the skills and trying to take in as much as I could. As a player, it's helped me a lot whether it was my skating, skills or just learning little things as much as I can. Coming into my fourth year, I know what to expect and right now it's about getting better every day; trying to get even better with skating and skills. It's always work and it's just fun to be here."

OI-What does the time together in Traverse City mean for the involved players and the team as a whole.

TB-"Yeah, it's great to come here. I know a lot of other teams have their development camp in their main city but I think it's nice to come here. We're on the beach and we get to meet new people every year, whether it's staff or new players coming in. We grow our family even more. You know, I think it's a great time here in Traverse City and my four years have been awesome here. Every year I love coming back and it's always exciting, whether it's little games off to the side outside of the rink or on ice. It's always fun and we're always learning."

OI-So you would say it's a good bonding experience for the team?

TB-"Yeah. A lot. New guys are coming in and, especially for me as a leader, I'm trying to get them used to it: Try not to be too nervous. It's fun, but learn as much as you can. And what to expect. I just try to let them know as much as I can."

OI-How does Development Camp help your game and your approach to the upcoming season?

TB-"You know Ken Holland has meetings with us and just what to expect and what to learn from. How to move on and try to play for the Detroit Red Wings. So I take it all in. I do what he says. I learn from what he says and I just do whatever I can to work on and off the ice. Try and better myself to get to the next level."

OI-It sounds like coming to Traverse City is a positive experience. Is there one thing in particular that makes it a positive experience for you?

TB-"Other than the on-ice - learning skills and learning from the coaches and important people that can help you down the road - it's meeting new faces. And we stay on the beach and it's such a nice view and Traverse City is so nice and there's a lot of activities to do that help the team bond. Coming back here every year, it's like a mini vacation."
