The BTER Foundation, like most charities, has a mission and a vision. We talk about health care and education and research . . . but at the heart of what we do, and why we do it, is PEOPLE.  The BTER Foundation functions for the benefit of people, and are successful because of the efforts of many people.  Today I think about this because I am still hurting over the loss of one of those people:  Dr. Theodore Cherbuliez, who passed away at the age of 88 on July 2 at his home in South Freeport, Maine.

Dr. Cherbuliez was born in Geneva, Switzerland, and came to the United States in 1959 for training in psychoanalysis.  As a psychiatrist, he worked for 53 years, both in private practice and at major centers such as Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Montefiore Hospital and Cornell Medical School. I came to know Dr. Cherbuliez through our participation at biotherapy meetings - myself speaking on maggot therapy, and Dr. Cherbuliez speaking about bee venom therapy (BVT) and apitherapy in general. We talked at meetings of the BTER Foundation and the International Biotherapy Society (IBS), and we corresponded via e-mail, as well. He was a Master Beekeeper, a BVT therapist for his community, and an apitherapy educator in the US and abroad. He was an active member of the biotherapy community in general (serving on the Executive Board of the IBS) and a very active member of the apitherapy community, with over 25 years of service as President or Vice President of the American Apitherapy Society, the Apimondia Apitherapy Commission, the Swiss Apitherapy Society, and the Belgian society, API-AR International.

Dr. Cherbuliez is survived by his adored and adoring wife of 56 years, Susan (who worked tirelessly with Theo on many of his apitherapy projects), his sister Isaline, and his daughters Ariane, Nicole, Lisa, Diana, and Juliette.

The obituary that appears in the New York Times describes Dr. Cherbuliez also as "a consummate Swiss, his passions included mountain climbing, piloting, recorder playing, baking bread, and caring for generations of cats." I would describe him also as a soft-spoken, gentle, warm, generous man. Much of what I know about the basic principles and philosophy of apitherapy, I learned from him. For those interested in hearing Dr. Cherbuliez speak about apitherapy, psychotherapy, and his  philosophy of healing, check out the interview by Dr. Lisa Belisle at:
http://themainemag.com/radio/2014/03/bees-132/, or view an article about his contributions to apitherapy here.

His New York Times obituary states that "Donations in his honor may be given to Doctors Without Borders, or The Southern Poverty Law Center." Another example of a wise and generous man reaching out to help other people. May his memory be a blessing for all.

With best wishes,

Sponsored Memberships - Take Advantage Now!
**Hurry, just a few sponsored memberships left**
The BTER Foundation has long had a program whereby one member could "sponsor" another member by paying their membership dues. This was particularly advantageous when we could find a sponsor to support those international members who did not have the funds for membership in an American professional society. Thanks to the generosity of one of our members, 20 sponsored memberships were made available to the first 20 applicants. The memberships are valid for 6 months (through the end of 2016), and include all of the normal benefits except gift store discounts, which are reserved for sponsors and paying members. The purpose of this group of sponsored memberships is to introduce the rewards of membership to anyone who has considered joining the BTER Foundation but not yet made the commitment.

If you have been waiting to join, or if you are wondering whether it is worth joining . . . this is your opportunity to get in free for 6 months. Learn more about the benefits of BTER Foundation membership on our membership page . Remember: only a few spots remain, to be disbursed on a first-come basis.  If you would like to take advantage of sponsored membership, please notify us straight away at info@BTERFoundation.org , and then apply for your membership online here , specifying your membership category (professional/student/community member).  Contac t info@BTERFoundation.org  if you have any questions.
