University Club Announces Seventh “Artist in Residence”
Geoffrey Doig-Marx-GDM to Exhibit Work
from September – December 2016

In addition to paintings by Jonathan Bradley Morse and Walter Launt Palmer and sculpture by Terri Boor, the Living Room, Lobby and Dining Room of the University Club of Albany have long featured works from a variety of local artists.

From September 2 through December 2016, the University Club will present a solo exhibition of the works of Geoffrey Doig-Marx, who will serve as the Club’s seventh Artist in Residence.

Geoffrey Doig-Marx (GDM) left home at age 15 and lived in runaway shelters and group homes in the Albany area. In the mid-1980s he moved to New York City and started his career in dance, musical theatre and choreography. In December of 2011, Doig-Marx started painting, photographing, writing and hasn’t looked back.

Now with over 500 paintings and thousands of photographs, GDM is everywhere. Presently, he is the resident Artist of POSH NYC (3 years), is illustrating a children’s book for Emmy Award Winner Andrea Green based on her musical On the Other Side of the Fence, and has had several showings of his work in New York including the Pecora Building and historic nightclub Alibi in Harlem. His first New York gallery showing was at The Lanyon 36 Trade Gallery and Showroom in 2015. For more information, visit www.gdmartist.com .

A Meet the Artist reception will be held on 1st Friday, September 2 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the National Register-listed University Club at 141 Washington Avenue at Dove Street. The reception is free and open to the public as part of the University Club’s participation in 1st Friday, the arts walk that showcases the lively art scene in downtown Albany. Please RSVP with the links on this page or by calling the Club at 518-414-3555.

Scheduled to run through Friday, December 23, the exhibition will be on view during public and special events at the Club, and by appointment with the artist, who will receive an honorary membership in the University Club for the duration of the show. Previous Artists in Residence include Ken Ragsdale, SUNY Chancellor Nancy Zimpher and David Hinchen. Their work spanned many artistic disciplines, including drawing, painting, sculpture, paper-craft, and photographs.

Doig-Marx is on faculty at Marymount Manhattan College (16 yrs), Montclair State University (6 yrs) and Rider/ARB’s Princeton Ballet School (13 yrs). He is a member of Actor’s Equity and an associate member of The Society of Directors and Choreographers and Former Artistic Director of The Mantis Project Dance Company (10 yrs). As a performer, Doig-Marx appeared in the Equity National Tours and Regional Theater Productions of West Side Story, Pippin, A Chorus Line, Dames at Sea, Cabaret, La Cage aux Folles, Fiddler on the Roof, Jesus Christ Superstar and many others.

He maintains close ties to the arts scene in Albany through membership in the Upstate Artists Guild and a number of choreography credits at Park Playhouse, including Fiddler on the Roof (2004), Annie Get Your Gun (2010), The Producers (2011), Cabaret (2012), Spamalot (2013) and Hands on a Hardbody (2014).

“Years ago, I played Lucky in Dames at Sea with Benita Zahn as my love interest, Joan. This was back when Park Playhouse was just starting out, and the lawn was the only place to sit to watch the show,” said Doig-Marx. “I’ve had an amazing journey of life that started in Albany and continues through today. So many people have become life-long friends and they continue to inspire me. I am honored to be asked and to show my work at the University Club in Albany.”

The Artist in Residence program furthers the University Club and Foundation’s commitment to promote the use of the historic Clubhouse as a venue for performing and visual arts as well as cultural events. It builds on the success of the October, 2011 Athletic Annex Exhibition curated by local artist Chip Fasciana. For 9 days, the University Club’s former fitness annex was transformed into a “pop up art gallery” with an exhibition featuring some 20 local and regional artists. The Athletic Annex Exhibition was part of MoHu – the Mohawk Hudson Art Festival featuring theatre, dance, music, visual and random acts of art throughout the region.

This event is presented by the University Club of Albany Foundation, Inc., and one need not be a member of the University Club to attend. The 501c3 Foundation which was formed in 2009 to recognize and maintain the unique historic and architectural significance of the University Club building and property, its neighborhood and the city of Albany, where it has been located since its inception in 1901. Support for educational programming presented by the University Club Foundation is provided by AT&T.
