Last Chance to View First Group of Sculptures in City of Newport Beach Civic Center Park

 
The first ten sculptures installed two years ago in the City of Newport Beach Civic Center Park have come to the end of their loan period and will be removed beginning August 17.  (They were joined the following year with a second group of works, which will remain on display until August 2017.)  As of press time, the City of Newport Beach has not made plans to continue the program, which has disappointed many fans of the installation.  More information about the exhibition may be found here. Three Longtime Pacific Symphony Musicians Retiring
      
Three Pacific Symphony veteran musicians conclude their tenures after more than 80 cumulative years serving the orchestra and community.   Stepping down are Concertmaster Raymond Kobler, Principal Viola Robert Becker and Fourth Horn Russell Dicey (pictured left to right above).   When Kobler joined Pacific Symphony in 1999, he arrived with an already-impressive pedigree, having served in titled positions for a number of major American orchestras and performed a number of world premieres for solo violin. He has contributed his expertise and leadership to Pacific Symphony, making a significant impact on the orchestra's artistic growth and achievements. Similarly, Becker and Dicey have devoted themselves in service to the orchestra and the Orange County community.  Becker and Dicey intend to remain active in music: Becker as director of strings at Chapman University and Dicey as continuing music librarian for the Symphony.
ArtsOC Summer Mixer August 18 at OCCCA
Arts Orange County members and prospective members are invited to attend its summer mixer, graciously hosted by the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art (OCCCA)  It's a great opportunity to meet and network with your colleagues in the arts community over wine and hors d'oeuvres--and to enjoy OCCCA's exhibition "Chicano/Latino Artists United for Social Justice."  It will be held on Thursday, August 18, from 5-7 pm.  Admission is free. The Wooden Floor Wins $240,000 Surdna Grant

The Wooden Floor, an award-winning creative youth development nonprofit in Santa Ana, announced that it has received a three-year Thriving Cultures grant from the Surdna Foundation totaling $240,000. As part of their Teens' Artistic and Cultural Awareness priority, Surdna seeks to invest in organizations which further their belief in arts and culture training programs to help young people achieve their educational and career goals, and thereby catalyze change in their communities. The Wooden Floor's grant objective is to strengthen and deepen teen artistic programming in support of its long-term goals to transform youth in low-income communities through the power of dance and access to higher education.
Lissa Slay is OC's New Rep on TASC Advisory Council

Lissa Slay, an educator, director, and teaching artist, has succeeded Adriana Sanchez Alexander as the Orange County representative on the Regional Advisory Council for the Teaching Artist Support Collaborative (TASC).  She is a full-time elementary theatre teacher for Orange Unified School District, teaching theatre to grades 5 and 6; she is also the Director of Education for American Coast Children's Theatre out of Vanguard University, a Segerstrom Center for the Performing Arts teaching artist, and a Curriculum Integration Specialist for The Collaboratory.
California Humanities Announces Guidelines for Documentary Grant
California Humanities has announced a deadline of November 1, 2016 for the  California Documentary Project  (CDP) competitive grant program. CDP supports the research and development and production stages of humanities-based media projects that enhance our understanding of California and its cultures, peoples, and histories.  Details here.
Arts Marketing Conference Comes to LA in October
ArtsReach's National Arts Marketing, Development & Ticketing Conference will be held in Los Angeles at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel on October 18 and 19.  The theme is Putting It All Together, and the conference will devote attention to the new Wallace Foundation Report "Taking out the Guesswork" as well as offer a Special Digital Marketing Track.  More details here.
