Summer 2016  Newsletter

From the President
George Garland

Last week's UNA-USA's Leadership Call featured a report from the Better World Campaign telling us that our Members Day on the Hill visits were timely and effective. Recent Senate action on the budget fully funded UN operations and peacekeeping---and exceeded the President Obama's request to fund fifteen UN agencies.  Kudos to our three teams of New York members visiting the House and Senate!

Summer 2016 is a time filled with opportunities.

Division Board members and chapter leaders interested in education will be brainstorming together on programming and partnership possibilities for 2016-2017 on Saturday, August 13, at the Manhattan UN Foundation offices.

Director of UNA Education Programs Troy Wolfe will facilitate our meeting and brief participants on many UNA-USA education activities, including grants from EPA and PwC, the New York City Junior Ambassadors Program, Model UN Mini-simulations, and the partnership with the Lebanese American University. We will also hear about Adopt-A-Future (see below), outreach to New York City schools, and collaborations with GenUN chapters. And the many strengths of our chapters, such as Westchester's involvement with a multi-county social studies teachers conference, will be highlighted.

We will then have an opportunity to brainstorm possible collaborations with Alpha Kappa Alpha graduate and undergraduate chapters, activities to supplement UNA-USA education programs, and possible new grant packages for future programs.

Working together can make a difference!

Advocacy Updates
The 2016 Advocacy Priorities Agenda was prepared by the Advocacy Committee of the CCR from the results of the survey of Chapters and Divisions. It was released during the June Leadership Call.

There are seven issues: full funding for the UN including peacekeeping dues; peace, security and conflict resolution (including 16 peacekeeping operations); refugees and the humanitarian crisis; Sustainable Development Goals as a whole, and SDG3-health, SDG5-women and gender, and SDG13-climate change.

Adopt-A-Future
UNA-USA Executive Director Chris Whatley encourages chapter participation in Adopt-A-Future, a UNA-USA campaign to add much needed civil society-funding for refugees to supplement governmental efforts. More information is available at  unausa.org/programs/adopt-a-future. Currently, the UN High Commission on Refugees is working in nine countries, in 64 locations, where we can amplify their work.

Our  UN Day  theme nationally will be on a currently estimated 65 million refugees. Packets of information will be provided by UNA-USA. The Southern New York State Division will sponsor a UN Day event on refugees  October 28 at SUNY Manhattan  Global Center, featuring DoJ Assistant Chief Immigration  Judge Robert Weisel and Associate Professor Rey Koslowski, Rockefeller College. More details to follow.
