Presbytery Members to Serve on PC(USA) National Committees

The Presbytery of Baltimore is proud to announce that two of our members have accepted appointments from the General Assembly Nominating Committee to serve on national committees of the Presbyterian Church (USA).

Ruling Elder James Parks, our current Moderator,
Moderator James Parks
will serve on the Presbyterian Mission Agency Board.  PMA i s the mission and ministry agency of the PC(USA)  The Board can be likened to the Session of a congregation, shepherding all of the work of the PMA.   Parks said his election to the PMA Board is both an honor and very humbling.  "This is not something I earned, but rather, it is a recognition of all the hard work our entire Presbytery is doing to address the real problems of racism, poverty and class in our church and society," he added.

A member of Hunting Ridge Presbyterian Church, Parks has served as moderator since September 2015; and, he has also  served our Presbytery as a member and chair of the former Peace & Justice Committee & Social Witness Committee. He worked as a journalist, serving as editor of six different newspapers. In 1988, he volunteered to work as media liaison in Rev. Jesse Jackson's presidential campaign. For 21 years, he was an editor and writer for the AFL-CIO national headquarters in Washington D.C., specializing in international human rights, civil rights, religion/labor partnerships and collective bargaining. He also served as an official observer of the first free election in South Africa in 1994. He retired in 2012.

Our other nominee, Rev. Dr. Karen Brown, has accepted an appointment to serve on the Self-Development of People (SDOP) committee.  SDOP is the arm of our ministry that strives to empower those who are working to get out of systems of inequality and poverty.  Rev. Brown is a member at large in the Presbytery of Baltimore.  She grew up at Faith Presbyterian Church and credits he church's strong youth ministry and Christian Education program for her call to ministry.

Rev. Brown has served as the Associate Pastor of
Rev. Dr. Karen Brown
Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church and the Executive Director of the Madison Avenue Family Life Center. She currently serves as a grant writer for Intersection of Change, a non-profit in Sandtown Winchester which operates Martha's Place, a drug rehabilitation program for women; and Jubilee Arts, a cultural arts program for youth.

We have a very active Presbytery-level committee and we look forward to Karen's participation on the national level. Please join the Presbytery in congratulating - and thanking - both of these colleagues in their willingness to serve the larger Church.
