NATIONAL DAIQUIRI DAY
Each year on July 19, people across the United States fill their glasses with a rum-based cocktail and toast to National Daiquiri Day. So, raise your glass and join all of the others in this celebration!
Daiquiri is a family of cocktails whose main ingredients are rum, citrus juice (typically lime) and sugar.
Tasting of sunshine and beaches, it might be hard to believe the daiquiri was likely invented by men blasting away in the mines of a small community off the coast of Cuba.  Jennings Cox, an American engineer, supervised a mining operation located in a village named Daiquiri in 1898 during the Spanish-American War.  Every day after work Cox and his employees would gather at the Venus bar. Then one day Cox mixed up Bacardi, lime, sugar in a tall glass of ice. Naming the new beverage after the Daiquiri mines, the drink soon became a staple in Havana.  Eventually, shaved ice was used and sometimes lemons or both lemons and limes.
In 1909, Admiral Lucius W. Johnson, a U.S. Navy medical officer, tried Cox's drink and subsequently introduced it to the Army and Navy Club in Washington, D.C.  The popularity of the Daiquiri then increased over the next few decades.
The Daiquiri was one of the favorite drinks of writer Ernest Hemingway and President John F. Kennedy.
This drink is sometimes served frozen, combined and poured from a blender eliminating the need for manual pulverization.  Drinks such as the frozen Daiquiri are often commercially made in machines which produce a texture similar to a smoothie and come in a wide variety of flavors.  Another way to create a frozen Daiquiri is by using frozen limeade, which provides the required texture, sweetness and sourness all at one time.
HOW TO OBSERVE
Enjoy National Daiquiri Day gathered together with your friends and a glass of regular or frozen Daiquiri (Remember to always drink responsibly and never to drink and drive).

Bill Loehfelm - LET THE DEVIL OUT
Please join us when New Orleans author Bill Loehfelm returns to Octavia Books with the fourth book in his Maureen Coughlin series, LET THE DEVIL OUT.
Meet New Orleans beat cop Maureen Coughlin.
The Edgar Award winner Megan Abbott calls Coughlin a hero with whom we will go anywhere. She's complicated tough and naive, street-smart and vulnerable and, way too often, reckless. As Let the Devil Out opens, she's in rough shape. Just a rookie, she's already been suspended from the force. And things are about to get worse.
The FBI is in town on the trail of a ruthless anti-government militia group, the Watchmen Brigade. Nobody in the NOPD wants any part of working with them. Guess which suspended rookie is told she doesn't have a choice.
With the FBI and a white supremacist militia on the loose in New Orleans, the city is one big powder keg. Find out what happens when a brilliant but impulsive young cop lights a match.
The rising crime fiction star Bill Loehfelm knows New Orleans. The streets, the people. Where the power lies, and how it gets used and abused. With Let the Devil Out, Loehfelm raises the bar for sharp, compelling crime fiction. As The New York Times says of the fascinating Maureen Coughlin, "She finds herself wrestling with ethical issues that fictional cops . . . rarely talk about, leaving that stuff to real-life cops and smart guys like Bill Loehfelm."
Bill Loehfelm is the author of Doing the Devil's Work, The Devil in Her Way, The Devil She Knows, Bloodroot, and Fresh Kills. He lives in New Orleans with his wife, the writer AC Lambeth, and plays drums in a rock-'n'-roll band.

 Summer Shakespeare is back!
Swine Palace is thrilled to present JULIUS CAESAR!  Director Jane Page transports this classic Shakespearean story and its characters to a contemporary, relatable world that is all too familiar. This adapted 90-minute version of JULIUS CAESAR delves deeply into the conscious decisions that lead to a violent conspiracy and the consequences of those actions. Page explores the lens through which we see the violence in our communities and questions our ability to truly understand these incidents as we are bombarded with information through the ever-present modern technology. A timeless story of political intrigue, this production asks if we, as a human race, can ever rise to the higher ground of fairness, honor and justice?

The show runs July 20 - 24, 2016 in the Reilly Theatre on the LSU Campus
.  Tickets are on sale at swinepalace.org
and are only $15 for everyone!

EXTERIOR. POOL-NIGHT
Directed by Andrew Larimer
July 21 - 31 | Aloft New Orleans Downtown
Come for the show. Stay for the pool party.

Theatrical mastermind Andrew Larimer (A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND) returns with an all-new immersive theatre experience set in and around a hotel rooftop pool in New Orleans' CBD neighborhood. A temperamental Hollywood star is directing his first major motion picture in New Orleans. And things are about to go off the deep end. Enjoy this summertime popcorn play that explores the chaos of filmmaking, the vanity of celebrity, and the monsters within us all. Oh yea, and did we mention that it all takes place in the rooftop pool and surrounding neighborhood of the Aloft Downtown New Orleans hotel? You've never experienced a play (or a post-show pool party) quite like this.

SPECIAL NOTE: Following each performance, the pool will be opened up for audience members to swim and partake in a cash bar at the Aloft Downtown New Orleans's rooftop pool where the production takes place. Patrons swim at their own risk and should come to the performance dressed to enjoy the pool if they wish to do so!

MOBILITY NOTICE: This production takes place in multiple locations both inside and outside of the hotel. Patrons should be comfortable walking and be prepared to stand for stretches of time as a part of the immersive experience. We do NOT allow patrons to bring their own seating to this production.

PARKING: Guests are invited to use our show sponsor Premium Parking for all your parking needs at EPN! We encourage you to use lot P146 located at 333 O'Keefe Ave . And guests that download the Premium Parking app either for iPhone or Android can use the promo code NOLAPROJECT for a discount on your parking!

The High Priestess of Dark Alley will play Le Petit Théâtre du Vieux Carré from July 7 - 24, 2016. The contemporary 7th Ward-set drama is written and directed by Jackie Alexander, author of last season's Brothers From The Bottom. In the play, two sisters- one robbed of her sexuality, the other defined by it- do battle with their domineering mother over the men they love. The High Priestess of
Dark Alley is the story of three Creole women, Celeste Thibodaux and her two daughters, Claire and Janee Charbonnet. Trapped by the conventions of intra-racial divisions within the African American community, the sisters are pitted against their mother regarding issues of color, class, sexuality and generational differences.

July 21 - Ronnie Kole
Jazz pianist Ronnie Kole's smooth sound and elegant demeanor have earned him respect from musicians across the globe. Kole sharpened his skills in Al Hirt's club and Kole's Corner on Bourbon Street. He was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame in 2012 and has recorded 32 CD/LP's. This New Orleans-based pianist keeps busy performing concerts across the United States, Europe and Asia.  For more information about the band, visit ronniekole.com.

July 28 - Ladies of Soul
You know Naydja CoJoe, Rechelle Cook, and Sharon Martin as, "The Ladies of Soul," having performed at the Garden with The Mystics. They will not only sing a bit of Motown, but also Jazz, R & B, and familiar New Orleans tunes.

August 4 - Bruce Daigrepont
Music came to Bruce at an early age, and in the most traditional manner--handed down from father to son. When he was growing up, no family gathering was complete without a little playing and singing. His father picked the guitar, "Carter Family-style," while his Uncle Alton lent a remarkable voice to the traditional Cajun songs and old-time country ballads. Bruce Daigrepont almost single-handedly has popularized Cajun music and Cajun dancing in cosmopolitan New Orleans.  For more information about the band, visit brucedaigrepont.com

August 11 - Julio and Cesar
Originally from Guatemala, Julio and Cesar Herrera have been in New Orleans for over 30 years.  They describe their music as constantly evolving, attributing this, in part, to their exposure from an early age to many cultures.  For more information about the band, visit julioandcesar.com.

August 18 - Pfister Sisters
Holley Bendtsen, Yvette Voelker, Debbie Davis and Amasa Miller comprise one of the few groups that represent the New Orleans swing era, with their recreation of the Boswell Sisters arrangements, and the only act featuring vocal jazz harmony. They bring joy to your soul, harmony to your ears, and the best and biggest boogie-woogie to your feet. For more information about the band, visit pfistersisters.com.

August 25 - Mark Brooks and Friends
Mark Brooks is one of New Orleans' most talented, versatile, and sought after bassist. Mark has played and toured with an array of artists including Dr. John, The Neville Brothers, Henry Butler, Charles and Aaron Neville's Ensembles, Lou Rawls, Fats Domino, Ellis Hall Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Harry Connick, Sr. Mark is known for his diversity with the different styles of music ranging from Rhythm & Blues, Contemporary Jazz, Traditional Jazz, Blues, and Gospel. Mojo's Four Part Event Series "A Method to Our Madness" will Bring Out the Barista in us all
Coffee drinkers are invited to learn how to make the most of their brew beginning on Sunday,

Coffee enthusiasts and those who are eager to learn are invited to the interactive demonstrations led by some of the most talented baristas and roasters in the city on Sunday : Sunday, July 24; Sunday, Aug. 7 and Sunday, Aug. 21. The events are free and open to the public and will be held at Mojo Coffee House at 4700 Freret Street beginning at 7 p.m.

At the first event in the series "A Barista's Guide to Home Brewing," Mojo's lead baristas will offer instructions on how to achieve ideal coffee extraction at home using simple and inexpensive tools. Demonstrations will focus on two hand-brewing methods: the Hario V60 and Chemex Coffeemaker. Attendees will leave with all of the know-how they need to brew the perfect pour-over. The event will be held on Sunday, July 10.

On July 24, Mojo Roastmaster Matt Cronin will lead "A Roaster's Guide to Cupping," walking guests through the process of how to professionally evaluate coffee. Similar to a wine tasting, cupping engages the senses of taste and smell, and can allow the casual coffee drinker a more comparative approach to tasting than they get with their morning trip to the shop. Coffee aficionados and newbies will get the chance to learn what a roaster does and why they select the specific coffees that they choose to purchase. This demo will help coffee lovers to make more informed choices about the coffees they choose for themselves at coffee shops or to drink at home.

"We select our offerings by tasting hundreds of different coffees per year," said Mojo Coffee Roasters Owner Demian Estevez. "Cupping is one of the most fun parts of being a coffee professional, but it's not something that our customers get to participate in. We think this will help people get a better idea of which coffees they like and why they like them."

The final two events in the series include: "A Barista's Guide to Cold Brewing" on Aug. 7 led by barista Ronnie Pelton that will teach the basics for making the essential New Orleans' summer coffee drink; and on Aug. 21 several top Mojo baristas will lead "One Coffee, Four Different Ways," demonstrating how one coffee can taste entirely different depending on the brewing device used. The devices demonstrated will include the Hario V60, Chemex, Aeropress and French Press. In the final event, guests will gain a greater understanding of why baristas use the tools they use, and which of these brewing options they prefer themselves.

All four events will be held at Mojo Coffee House at 4700 Freret Street at 7 p.m.. Mojo Coffee Roasters hopes to continue to inform the New Orleans coffee drinker on quality standards and the latest trends in coffee through this event series.

Mojo Coffee Roasters single origin coffees are roasted right here in New Orleans. They are now available for purchase in both Mojo Coffee House shops at 1500 Magazine St. and 4700 Freret St., at Ignatius Espresso Bar & Cafe, at Satsuma Cafe, and online at mojocoffeeroasters.com.

New Orleans' National Underwear Day parade is August 5
  • Burlesque dancer Trixie Minx is queen of New Orleans' National Underwear Day Parade.
National Underwear Day Parade NOLA

New Orleans, LA - July 5th, 2016 - August 5th is National Underwear Day and we're celebrating by throwing a parade... in our underwear!

The National Underwear Day Parade NOLA is hosted by conceptual artist Ryan S Ballard, Space Commander of the Krewe of Chewbacchus, and the brilliant and talented Xena Zeit-Geist of the Society of Sin , a true professional at doing amazing things in her underwear.

We are excited to crown Chris Leonard, the Executive Director of New Orleans Pride, and burlesque producer and performer Trixie Minx as the King & Queen of the inaugural Underwear Day Parade NOLA!

It doesn't matter if you are a man, woman, reptilian shape-shifter or moldy Sumerian god.  YOU are invited to show up in your freshest skivvies and march in a joyous celebration of underwear!

We are here to promote body positivity, liberation from the tyranny of outer garments, and... set the new Guinness World Record for the "Largest Gathering of People Wearing Only Underpants/Knickers"!

Be a part of something bigger than yourself!

The National Underwear Day Parade NOLA is 100% absolutely FREE to march in. We will start in Washington Square Park and set the World Record and then roll through the Marigny/Bywater ending at the "Free Ball" at Castillo Blanco Art Studios! Entry to the Ball is also FREE! Its a free ball. Free. Ball. Free Ball.

Gather in Washington Square at 6pm and be counted for the Guinness World Record.

Roll at 7pm.

In the new New Orleans, it seems people can't get enough parades or burlesque, and the two public displays are merging in a National Underwear Day parade, announced by organizers Ryan Ballard of the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus and Xena Zeit-Geist, founder of the Society of Sin burlesque troupe.

The parade is Friday, Aug. 5. There's a pre-party and gathering in Washington Square in Marigny at 6 p.m. The procession departs at 7 p.m. and travels to Castillo Blanco, the Chewbacchus den, where the group will hold its "Free Ball." Organizers have named royalty for the day. Chris Leonard, Executive Director of New Orleans Pride, is the King. Burlesque performer Trixie Minx is Queen. Admission to both events is free.

National Underwear Day is credited to underwear maker FreshPair. There is a websitethat collects unofficial national days. It lists July 5 as National Bikini Day, Apple Turnover Day and Graham Cracker Day. It lists Aug. 5 as National Oyster Day and Underwear Day.

Organizers are trying to set a Guinness World Record for the largest gathering of people wearing only underwear, according to a press release.

The 16th Annual Satchmo SummerFest
presented by Chevron
Satchmo SummerFest moves to Jackson Square in New Orleans' historic French Quarter; NEW 'Back o' Town Stage' with swing dance lessons inside Louisiana State Museum's Arsenal; Satchmo Symposium and other special events move to Le Petit Théâtre du Vieux Carré;
'Pops' Playhouse for Kids' at Louisiana State Museum's Arsenal (next to the Cabildo), and more!

New Orleans, Louisiana - French Quarter Festivals, Inc. (FQFI) proudly announces a major move for Satchmo SummerFest presented by Chevron: the 16th annual event will take place in Jackson Square on August 5-7, 2016. The move will help FQFI achieve its goal to grow Satchmo SummerFest, which began in 2001 as a way to commemorate Louis 'Satchmo' Armstrong's 100th birthday. Since its inception, the event - previously held at the Louisiana State Museum's Old U.S. Mint - has turned into New Orleans' premier traditional jazz festival, annually attracting an average of 40,000 attendees. "As we celebrate the Festival's 16th anniversary - and Louis Armstrong's 116th birthday - we are thrilled to move into New Orleans' most beautiful, iconic park. Like Louis Armstrong, Jackson Square is beloved and integral to New Orleans' history and culture. The new location, along with our incredible symposium panelists, traditional jazz musicians, great restaurants, and special events will make this year's event incredibly memorable, historic, and high profile." said Marci Schramm, Executive Director of French Quarter Festivals, Inc. Satchmo SummerFest is held annually on the weekend closest to August 4th - Louis Armstrong's birthday.
Three Full Days of Music and a New Indoor Stage
Attendees can look forward to festival fare from some of New Orleans' best restaurants, unique cultural events like a traditional jazz mass and second lines, a Trumpet Tribute and Birthday Party for Louis Armstrong, and children's activities. Satchmo SummerFest presented by Chevron also will bring three full days of music, featuring dozens of New Orleans' finest traditional and contemporary jazz musicians and brass bands.
Introducing the New 'Back o' Town' Stage
This year Satchmo SummerFest grows with the addition of the new 'Back o' Town' stage located inside the air-conditioned Louisiana State Museum's Arsenal (600 St. Peter Street, 2nd floor). The 'Back o' Town' will feature a dance floor, NOLA Jitterbugs, and live dance music on Saturday and Sunday. Inside Jackson Square, two additional stages (the 'Red Beans and Ricely Yours Stage' and 'Cornet Chop Suey Stage') will provide three days of musical performances. The lineup includes Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Big Sam's Funky Nation, Bill Summers & Jazalsa, Kermit Ruffins, Brass-A-Holics, Catherine Russell (debut), Yoshio Toyama and the Dixie Saints, Jeremy Davenport, Trumpet Tribute to Louis Armstrong featuring James Andrews, Victor Goines (debut), Wendell Brunious, and many more. Visit fqfi.org/satchmo to view the full music schedule.
Satchmo Symposium to Include Pulitzer Panel Celebrating the 100-Year Anniversary of the Pulitzer
The Satchmo Symposium, three days of fascinating seminars with internationally-respected Satchmo scholars and musicians, will be held inside Le Petit Théâtre du Vieux Carré. This year's Symposium includes a special panel developed in partnership with the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities and Pulitzer: Celebrating 100 years of Pulitzer - From New Orleans to the World Stage: The Artistic Journeys of Louis Armstrong and Wynton Marsalis. The panel will explore and contrast the approaches, outlooks, and outputs of both artists - as well as how they were influenced by New Orleans; it will be moderated by New Orleans journalist (NOLA.com|The Times-Picayune) and historian James Karst.

On Friday, August 5, Grammy Award-winning artist Catherine Russell will present From Satchmo's Knee to a Grammy. Russell grew up in New York City as the daughter of musical royalty: her father was pianist, bandleader, and longtime Louis Armstrong musical director Luis Russell; her mother, Carline Ray, was a celebrated artist who performed with the International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Mary Lou Williams, and Ruth Brown, among others. Catherine, who met Louis Armstrong when she was very young, has toured the world as a backup singer with such top artists as David Bowie, Jackson Browne, and Cyndi Lauper - and over the last 10 years has released five critically-acclaimed CDs (and earned a Grammy) as a solo artist and bandleader. Catherine makes her Satchmo SummerFest debut on stage at Festival and will talk about her fascinating musical heritage and wide-ranging career with interviewer Fred Kasten.

Author Mick Carlon presents A Conversation with Jack Bradley. Bradley was one of Pops' most trusted friends as well as the 'photo-taker' of some of the most beautifully candid Armstrong photographs ever captured. Bradley traveled with Armstrong for years, taking photos and collecting an incredible collection of artifacts which were recently donated to the Louis Armstrong House Museum and Archives in New York. Jack, now 82 and retired on Cape Cod, sat down for a wide-ranging interview with Carlon about his deep friendship with the man the world knew and loved as 'Satchmo.' The recently-recorded interview will be shown on Sunday, August 7. A full Satchmo SummerFest Symposium schedule can be found at fqfi.org/satchmo.
'Spirit of Satch Awards' and Other Special Events
The 16th anniversary of Satchmo SummerFest presented by Chevron also brings the return of the 'Spirit of Satch' Awards. Winners are champions of jazz and New Orleans music in a variety of areas, including 'Jazz Education', 'Keeping Traditional Jazz Alive and Well', and 'Preserving our Musical Legacy'. The winners will be announced at festival on Friday, August 5 during the opening ceremony on the 'Red Beans and Ricely Yours' stage.

In addition to music and education, Satchmo SummerFest presented by Chevron showcases New Orleans' most important indigenous traditions, such as a Sunday morning Jazz Mass at the historic St. Augustine Church in Treme; a traditional second line parade; and traditional jazz dance lessons. Other special events include an opening reception at the beautiful and historic Omni Royal Orleans Hotel (the official hotel of Satchmo SummerFest), a special Louis Armstrong film screening at Le Petit Théâtre du Vieux Carré, 'Pops' Playhouse' - a dedicated children's area, and a Trumpet Tribute and birthday celebration to close the festival. The festival also features authentic Creole cuisine from the area's finest restaurants to create 'Red Bean Alley.' Daily admission is $5 (children 12 and under are free).  For more information on FQFI festivals and events visit fqfi.org or call 504-522-5730.

New Orleans, Louisiana - French Quarter Festivals, Inc. (FQFI) proudly announces the 2016 Satchmo SummerFest poster artist, Terry Marks, Sr. A New Orleans native, Marks is president of the Metairie Art Guild, as well as an active member of the New Orleans Art Association and Jefferson Art Guild. After obtaining a degree in Advertising Art, he opened a sign business in 1976 and his work can be seen all over the region. The original poster art, a vibrant portrait of Louis Armstrong with a retro, sub-tropical vibe, was carved from wood salvaged from the old Dixie Brewery. "The wood was over 200 years old. I felt that only a New Orleans legend such as Louis Armstrong would be a fitting subject for this piece," Marks said.

Festival-goers will have the opportunity to meet the artist during the 16th annual Satchmo SummerFest, which takes place August 5-7 at Jackson Square. Satchmo SummerFest is the premier American jazz festival dedicated to the life, legacy, and music of New Orleans' native son, Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong. THE 8th ANNUAL NEW ORLEANS BURLESQUE FESTIVAL

From September 15 - 18, the most glamorous and eye-popping burlesque dancers from around the globe come together to perform over four nights in sultry New Orleans, to shimmy, shake, bump and grind.

The New Orleans Burlesque Festival has established itself as one of the top burlesque festivals in the world. An estimated 2500 people are in attendance over the weekend. Besides performers from across the USA, this year's fest will feature dancers from New Zealand, Australia, London, Tokyo, and Canada.

A highlight of the festival is the Queen of Burlesque competition in which eight of the top classic striptease dancers compete for the title, accompanied entirely by a live jazz band. Sold-out every year, the competition is moving to bigger venue this year, The Civic. The annual Bad Girls of Burlesque, which is now a monthly show at House of Blues, is a highly anticipated showcase featuring an array of kick-ass women from all over the world.

Besides showcases, the festival includes an opening and closing party. Celebrated guests of the festival include Rita Alexander the Champagne Girl and Leslie Zemeckis. Rita Alexander was a headline attraction on Bourbon Street in the 1960s. Leslie Zemeckis authored the book, Behind the BurlyQ and Goddess of Love Incarnate: The Life of Stripteuse Lili St. Cyr.

Celebrate this classic form of adult entertainment that made Bourbon Street famous worldwide.

"In recent years, it has been exciting to watch Americans take an ever-growing interest in the sourcing, preparation, and artistry that goes into the food we eat," said Susan Ungaro, president of the James Beard Foundation. "There are great chefs turning out truly inspired food from Charleston to Portland and everywhere in between, and we are thrilled to be able to bring so many of them together to foster a delicious dialogue about our country's vibrant culinary landscape for the fourth year running."
The James Beard Foundation is proud to donate a portion of the evening's proceeds to the Taste America Scholarship Fund. Local culinary students in Louisiana are invited to apply for this culinary scholarship between April 1 and May 15, 2017, via jamesbeard.org. Candidates will be reviewed by the JBF Scholarship Selection Committee, chaired by Ungaro.

Tasting Notes
With tempting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry and spice, Zin-phomaniac is a complex, full-bodied wine with juicy, approachable flavors of ripe blue-purple fruit and dark semi-sweet chocolate. A kiss of vanilla and a touch of brown baking spice add depth to the long, satisfying mouthfeel.

Love New Orleans & She'll Love You Back.

Sincerely,

Frank Stansbury
