Jimmy Malone Celebrates 20 Years with Annual Golf Classic

The Malone Scholars at the 20th Annual Malone Scholarship Golf Classic

College Now Board Member and WMJI radio personality Jimmy Malone, his wife, April, and his daughter, Angela, celebrated the 20th anniversary of their scholarship program with College Now on July 11th at the annual Malone Scholarship Golf Classic.

The Golf Classic was a sell-out again this year, with 43 fivesomes, each including four golfers and a local celebrity, like Fox8's Kenny Crumpton, WTAM's Bill Wills, WGAR's Brian Fowler and retired professional soccer player Otto Orf.

After lunch with the Malone Scholars and other distinguished guests, like Congressman Jim Renacci, and a great day on the links at Westfield Country Club, golfers enjoyed dinner and participated in the auction, which grossed over $230,000 to support the Malone Scholarship program. Big ticket items included an autographed Kyrie Irving jersey, United Airlines tickets and packages from Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar and A-1 Mr. Limo.

The Malone Scholarship Golf Classic is an event we look forward to every year, and we congratulate Jimmy, April and Angela on their first 20 years and look forward to the next 20!
PwC Hosts College Now's Upward Bound Summer Program

Upward Bound students with College Now board member and PwC Lake Erie Market Managing Partner, Mark Ross
The Cleveland office of PwC welcomed 13 of College Now's Upward Bound students to their offices on Thursday, July 14.  The day kicked off with PwC's Lake Erie Market Managing Partner and College Now board member, Mark Ross, who spoke with students about how he enjoys solving clients' problems and giving them insight into the accounting profession. Mark introduced his College Now mentee, Sean Sovacool, to the group.  Sean, having just completed his first year at Miami University, let the students know how he was able to secure many scholarships which led to him attending the college of his choice and join a program where he will graduate with his masters in accounting in four years.

The students heard from seven other PwC professionals about their roles at the firm. The PwC professionals engaged them in a financial literacy workshop as well as a tour of PwC's Cleveland office. In addition to hosting the Upward Bound students, the PwC office has led three impact programs with College Now and has 30 partners and staff enrolled as College Now mentors.

Many thanks to Mark Ross and the entire PwC team for their hospitality and their continued support of College Now!
Join College Now for a Great Leadership Opportunity!
Since 1967, we've worked hard to help thousands of students from low-income backgrounds navigate the often bumpy road to - and through - college. Our alumni have been an important part of our history. And to ensure our alumni remain part of our future,  we are pleased to announce the creation of the College Now Emerging Leaders Program!

The Emerging Leaders Program will serve as the governing body of the College Now Alumni Association and will be instrumental in its growth and development. The opportunity to become an Emerging Leader is open to alumni and non-alumni in Northeast Ohio.

If you would like to become a College Now Emerging Leader, please submit an application  sharing your interest in the program, as well as the qualities and experience you feel make you an Emerging Leader. You also will need to have two professional references complete this brief form. Both forms, as well as the Emerging Leaders Roles and Expectations, may be found here.

If you have not yet submitted your materials, the application and reference forms are due Friday, August 5, 2016. We plan to announce our Emerging Leaders in September.

Please feel welcome to contact Racheal Seibert at (216) 635-0186 or alumni@collegenowgc.org with questions. We look forward to hearing from you!
Mentoring Pair Reflects on Three Years Together

Vanessa Jacob (Baldwin Wallace University) and her mentor, Liana Wiemels (Baldwin Wallace University), were paired together in fall 2013, the beginning of Vanessa's freshman year. As Vanessa prepares to enter her senior year at BW, both she and Liana took some time to reflect on their relationship and experience in the Mentoring Program.
For Liana, mentoring Vanessa has been a rewarding experience. She is in awe of all Vanessa has been able to accomplish so far and has really enjoyed being a part of her journey.

"It has been both an honor and a privilege to mentor Vanessa. It is often difficult being the first one in your family to go away to college and Vanessa continuously demonstrates just how 'easy' it can be to juggle it all...She always has a plan and she perseveres through all of life's demands, expectations, and sometimes the unexpected...She is not only an amazing woman, but an exceptional student. Her passion and love for speech pathology and the work she studies is contagious. She puts her very best work forward and her compassion to help others truly shines through.

Vanessa has almost conquered it all during her 3 years in college and she will continue to conquer the world.  I can't wait to see where the next 3 years of her life takes her. Thank you, Vanessa, for making this experience so positive and self-rewarding. I am so very proud of you!"

Vanessa acknowledges how far she has come during her three years at BW, but she is quick to point out that her progress and success is connected to her mentoring relationship with Liana.

"I want to express my utmost appreciation for what College Now, and especially the mentoring program, has given to me. Liana has been absolutely wonderful from my freshman year until now. She is always willing to extend a helping hand, especially when it comes to professional development...She is also fantastic at helping me stay sane when stress from school starts to get to me. I have noticed a huge increase in my independence from freshman year to now, and I believe that is a direct cause of Liana. I needed her so much more in the beginning as I navigated my way through difficult college transitions, and now I feel that our correspondence consists of more general check-ins.

Thank you so much, College Now, for all that you do for students. I know I would not have made it this far without your help!"
