HRS Summer Newsletter 2016-2017

Dear Holy Rosary School Families,

We are in the midst of summer vacation, yet the time has come to start preparing for the upcoming school year.  This newsletter has the information to get you started!

I want to update you on our faculty for this coming school year.  Following the end of school, Ms. Palladino accepted a position as a resource teacher at St. Patrick School in Rodeo.  We wish Ms. Palladino well in her new role and know she will do great things.  Ms. Oseguera will also be leaving us as she has taken a position at Edna Hill in Brentwood.  Although we are sad to see her go, we know that she will have a positive impact on the students she will be teaching.

After going through the interview process, we have hired David Scholz for 8th grade homeroom.  Mr. Scholz has taught Language Arts in a number of Catholic Schools in our Diocese and is looking forward to joining the staff at Holy Rosary School.  We have also hired Remy Ibe as our 7th grade homeroom and Science teacher.  Mr. Ibe is a Holy Rosary parishioner and taught in Nigeria before coming to the United States where he began teaching at a Catholic School in San Jose.  This year, Leah Hall will be joining our teaching staff as one of the 3rd grade teachers.  Mrs. Hall has been with Holy Rosary School as the Director of Serendipity Club for 15 years and is excited about moving into the classroom, a position she has been working towards.

After interviewing a number of applicants for 2nd grade, we have hired Lisa Bento.  Mr. Bento is also a Holy Rosary parishioner and as a credentialed teacher has been working in the Brentwood School District.  We are welcoming Keri Hourigan who will be transitioning from her past position as an aide at Holy Rosary School into the 1st grade classroom.  As a credentialed teacher, Mrs. Hourigan taught for a number of years before taking some time away from the classroom.  We are currently interviewing for a music teacher and a Spanish teacher.

We also have a few program changes this year.  The first is that the Diocese of Oakland Safe Environment Office has moved to VIRTUS training programs with regards to Safe Environment training for volunteers - see the Volunteer Requirements section for more information.  The second change is to the student lunch program.  Due to a change in the contract with Antioch Unified School District, the Diocese was unable to provide insurance for this program.  As a result, we have  contracted with Choice Lunch.  Information on this new lunch program will be emailed to you in a separate newsletter before the start of school.  And the third change is that we have had a price increase with the Tuesday pizza sales during lunch.  Prices this year are: slice of pizza $2.50, sport drink $1.50 and bottled water $1.00 - cash only, no checks.

I do ask that you review the Uniform and Dress Code Guidelines with your students.  As a school, we need and appreciate your parental support with your students in adhering to the school dress code.  If in doubt, please check in with us for clarification.

A reminder that if your student has the need to take any medication during school hours, you (and your student's doctor) must complete the Diocesan form Appendix 6009A.  Click here for this appendix which includes guidelines regarding the administration of medications at school.

Might I remind and encourage our 1st through 8th grade students to continue working on their summer math and reading packets.  If you are in need of another packet, both packets can be downloaded here:  Math Packet or Reading Packet

And finally, we look forward to seeing all of our families on August 17th for Sneak Peek.  We will begin with mass at 4:00pm in the church.  Classrooms will open at approximately 5:00pm, following mass.  Class assignments will be posted outside each classroom.  If you are unable to come to Sneak Peek, class assignments will be posted in the Dominican Hall on the first day of school.

I hope you have had the opportunity to spend time relaxing with family and friends during the summer.  Please don't hesitate to call the school office if you are in need of any assistance.  We look forward to this new school year with you and your children!

Blessings,

Mr. Hooke
Principal
