M'KOR MAIL
July 27, 2016
"Standing on the parted shores, we still believe what we were taught before ever we stood at Sinai's foot; that wherever we go, it is eternally Egypt; that there is a better place, a promised land; that the winding way to that promise passes through the wilderness. That there is no way to get from here to there except by joining hands, marching together."
[Mishkan T'filah]

Judaism commands us: "Do not separate yourself from the community." And yet, in Torah this week, we have the story of two Israelite tribes asking to remain outside the Land of Israel rather than continuing on the journey with the rest of the community.

After decades of wandering in the wilderness and taking care of each other, Moses is furious that these two tribes are no longer interested in settling in the land promised to them by God, and would let their brethren go to war without their help.
While the conflict runs deep, its resolution is one that both sides can live with, and how the disagreement is handled has plenty to teach us about our own relationships.

We'll be talking about the various aspects of this story throughout the weekend, focusing Friday evening on the theme of what it means to be part of community even when we don't always agree and what our responsibility is to one another, and, Saturday morning, on the theme of what our texts teach us about how to disagree with and rebuke others in a sacred way.

Friday evening, Cantor Hochman and I will be leading our Kabbalat Shabbat service beginning at 6:30 pm in the chapel. Feel free to come early to grab something to eat, schmooze, and sing a little before services as we move into Shabbat as community!

Shabbat morning, I will be leading Torah Study beginning at 10:00 am in the chapel.

And, make sure to mark your calendars for NEXT Saturday (August 6) as we gather for our annual M'kor at the Shore down in Margate.

B'shalom,

Rabbi Jennifer L. Frenkel

If you wish to have a Mi Shebeirach said during our Shabbat services, please let us know by noon each Friday so we can give the names to the rabbis.
