Old Donation Episcopal Church

July 31, 2016
Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost

Weekly Chimes

Dear Old Donation,

What a busy time it's been! VBS was a huge success last week, as was our Family Fun Beach Day! All ages were represented as we played on the beach, shared a meal, and celebrated the Eucharist. Kerah Howeth preached an amazing sermon, Marcella and Logan Lindsey were fantastic Eucharistic Ministers, and Levi was thrilled to administer the bread to everyone. It was an invigorating day.

Sunday was busy and thriving as well, with two baptisms at 9:15 and 10:30 in the Historic Church, a trip to Mission of the Holy Spirit, our usual 5:00 Summer Service, and five Readiness Assessment meetings. A week's worth of activity, all in a day! That's how we do it at Old Donation.

On that note, please do keep in mind that the Readiness Assessment meetings will be continuing through the next two weeks. If you haven't been to one, please, I urge you, attend. It is incredibly important for the future of our parish that each member knows, understands, and has a voice in this aspect of growing our church. We need to not only be heard by you, but to hear from you!

Tonight also brings us back to our first Wednesday Night Program of the summer, with a study of ICONS! Our guest teacher will be the Rev. Fr. George Bessinas, from Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Norfolk. Don't miss out on learning about this unique art form, which combines beauty and spiritual insight, and has it's own "rules" for writing and interpreting!

Finally, tomorrow night, Thursday July 28, will be our first Young Adults meeting! This group is geared towards individuals in their 20s and 30s, dinner will be provided, and children are welcome. We'll meet in Alfriend house from 6:00-7:30, and will get to know one another and begin to grow together in our faith. Let me know if you fit this group and want to join us!

That's all for now. Take care, friends, and I will see you all very soon!

In Christ,

What's Happening Today...

6:00pm Holy Eucharist
6:30pm Supper
7:00pm Adult Studies on Icons
Icons! This art form combines its own form of beauty and spiritual insight. Traditional icons have some specific rules for "writing" (rather than drawing or painting) and ways of interpretation. They are used in meditation and devotion. Our guest teacher will be the Rev. Fr. George Bessinas, from Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Norfolk.

THIS Sunday-Special Music and Potluck Lunch!
Paul Hudgins is taking a vacation day this Sunday, so our Sundays@5 musicians, known as "Random Acts" will provide the worship music for 9:15 & 10:30. Fr. Bob, Chris Randall, Greg Burroughs, Ben Urquidi and Martha Gentry, along with choir singers, will give us a taste of the music of the 5:00 service. After the 10:30 and Gathering service, we have pot-luck lunch in the Parish Hall. As usual for our summer pot-lucks, the church will supply fried chicken. Please bring side dishes, other entrees, salads or desserts to share.

People, Get Ready!
Meetings continue in order to assess our readiness and support for expanding our facilities for mission and ministry. These one hour meetings review the latest plan for capital improvements, ask for your feedback, and whether you believe you could support this project. There is NO solicitation.
PLEASE attend a session, no matter which service you attend.
Be sure to RSVP due to limited space.
