August 2016
Dear,

We hope you are finding ways to stay cool this summer! The Volunteer Center is a hub of activity as we gear up for the school year- read on to learn more...
Summer Fest Event Change:
...At the Heart of Supporting the Volunteer Center

Since summer is flying by and the heat is hitting sweltering digits, we've decided to forgo our outdoor Summer Fest event in favor of a "Beat the Heat" support campaign.  Stay cool on August 14 and send in a donation to support the Volunteer Center and the valuable work we do to inspire and engage volunteers in our community.

Put "Beat the Heat" in the memo of your check or in the notes on the online form and your donation will automatically enter you into an opportunity to win a prize!

Stay tuned for other special events coming later during cooler weather to help you get reacquainted with the exciting new projects that the Volunteer Center has underway.
Operation Teddy Bear School Supply Drive
...At the Heart of Preparing Children for School

Can you help us? We are looking for businesses, service groups and nonprofits to conduct collection drives to help us put even MORE great school supplies into the 5,600 schoolbags we will give out during the 2016-2017 academic year. This is a great opportunity to have a little fun while helping a great cause. Consider a competition and see how many boxes you can fill! Collection boxes are available from the Volunteer Center, and drives must be completed by October 15. Take advantage of the back to school sales, and pick up an extra box of crayons and a toothbrush or two!

...At the Heart of Helping Teens Find Meaningful Summer Service

Our VIVA summer youth program participants have had a busy few weeks! They put their volunteer training in action and organized two service projects. They hosted a 60's themed dance for the seniors at the Bartlett Senior Center and they also partnered with Beach Cities Health District to prepare a learning garden at a local elementary school.

Why I Support the Volunteer Center
...At the Heart of Giving

"When I discovered that so many children were going to school on an empty stomach, I knew I had to do something. With the immense passion that I have for childhood nutrition, I quickly searched for an organization  taking serious action. When I stumbled upon Food for Kids at the Volunteer Center, I realized where I needed to be. How are such young individuals supposed to be successful in school, if they do not have the necessary fuel to support their rapidly growing minds and bodies? Being able to support Food for Kids in the fight against hunger means everything to me. Volunteering for Food for Kids gives me a sense of purpose in life. I am beyond grateful to have the opportunity to help these children, because it means so much to be able to give rather than to receive."
