For friends, alumni and and supporters of St. Therese Chinese Catholic School

Letter from Principal Phyllis Cavallone
We officially closed another successful year of hard work and achievement at St. Therese this June.  Thank you for being a part of the St. Therese community - whether as an alum, donor or friend, you play an integral role in furthering our mission of providing children in Chicago's Chinatown community an incredible academic, spiritual and cultural experience.

We took a quick breath and immediately dove into several mission critical projects to be accomplished over the summer. Topping the list is responding to security concerns in the greater area by replacing our near-decade old security system and implementing over 20 high-tech security cameras in and around the school building. Other building improvements include a permanent interior wall between the pre-K and Junior Kindergarten rooms to minimize classroom distractions, school wide repairs and painting, new furniture, and new hallway art and photos.

We are also embarking on an exciting effort to upgrade and expand our website to enhance its use and functionality.  We want our primary public face to better reflect the world-class St. Therese experience.  I look forward to sharing more news on these exciting projects soon.

Graduation and Baccalaureate Celebrations
Thirty 8 th grader students celebrated the Baccalaureate Mass this May. During the ceremony, 8th grade students passed lit candles to 7 th grade students ("passing the torch") and received a congratulatory rose in turn . It is a meaningful tradition for the entire school community. The graduation celebration followed the next weekend.

We are proud of this year's graduates who have worked hard and are well prepared to take on the challenges of high school -- many at the most selective schools in the area, including U of C Lab School, Walter Payton, St. Ignatius, and many others.  In fact, this class chose from a remarkable 51 acceptances to the most selective CPS, Private and Parochial schools -- a magnificent tribute to these students' hard work and preparation.

Students Excel at Science Fair Expo and National Bees
Several St. Therese students attended the 2016 Illinois Junior Academy of Science State Exposition, and walked away with four medals, including the Gold Award for Paper and Poster by Abbey Haynes for "The Effect of Mycorrhizal Fungi on the Growth and Yield of Bean Plants."

Other winners include: Anthony Jurek and Derek Mei, Silver Award/Paper for "Does Weaving Have a Statistical Advantage for Driving Time Over a Fixed Distance?"; Shirley Tang, Silver Award/Poster, for "Effects of Shoe Design on Jumping Height"; and Allen Mai and Jodi Moy, Silver Award/Paper for "White Light vs. Blue Light." Congratulations to all who competed in the Expo - you make our school proud!

School Year Closes on a High Note
After a year of hard work and dedication, we allowed ourselves to take some time to celebrate with our incredible St. Therese community.  Among other events, students, teachers and staff enjoyed activities such as the 8 th grade trip to Springfield, Annual Talent Show, Spirit Week and the All School Fun Day.   Take a look at some fun photo highlights of the talent show and click more photos of other end-of-year events.
Spring Appeal Thank You
We extend a heartfelt thank you to the many generous supporters who helped us raise $18,800 in response to our Spring Appeal. Your generosity helped fund important areas of our budget including teachers' salaries, technology improvements and cultural programming. Your support makes the St. Therese experience possible for our students and families.
Summer School Wraps Up
The school has been positively bustling with activity and programs this summer!  Our traditional Summer Program hosted over 175 students, 40 Junior High students took our high school prep class, 34 students participated in math circles, all 5th graders attended a tech boot camp, and 63 students enjoyed our 2-week Outdoors Explorers Program.

We are proud to host this important summer activity for our students - not only does it keep the children safe and engaged during the summer, it also helps students avoid summer learning loss and start the new school year on even stronger footing.

Judge Liu's Crew members sported bright t-shirts with "Support the Justice Liu Fund" emblazoned on their backs.  The group took to the Chicago River for a day of fun and excitement in honor of their friend and colleague Laura Liu.
