It's hard to believe that August is already here and the new school year starts on Monday! There's a great deal of excitement - and maybe a little anxiety - in the air as families are preparing for the first day of school: purchasing the right school supplies; meeting the teachers and visiting the classrooms; and seeing old friends or meeting new ones.
We are also preparing for the traffic congestion that comes with school being in session. This is an issue that touches all of us here in Milton, and throughout metro Atlanta, and we have been working diligently on a solution for relief.
Over the past several months, Milton has worked side-by-side with Fulton County and our thirteen sister cities to initiate a referendum allowing voters to consider a special purpose local option sales tax of $0.75 for transportation projects. This could provide $569 million county-wide for congestion relief, maintenance and safety projects, bridges, and pedestrian/bike improvements.
Here's how this affects us: TSPLOST funds will be distributed to each city, based on their populations. During the 5-year period of the sales tax, we are projected to receive $36.5 million. These funds will be put toward projects identified in our Comprehensive Transportation Plan (CTP), currently being updated.
As the November 8 election nears, stay tuned to our website for further information or TSPLOST and the projects it could impact. Give me a call or stop by my office sometime to let me know what you think about how we're doing in Milton - we're here for you.
Sincerely,
Joe Lockwood
