International Students Needed! - FYS Section 13
 Welcome, new international students, to the University of Mount Union! I am
Dr. Oyabu-Mathis, professor of Sociology; I was once an international student on the Mount Union campus myself many years ago. Grown up in Hiroshima, Japan, coming to Mount Union truly was a dream come true for me. Now I enjoy teaching Sociology, a discipline that examines the impact of social and cultural forces on the lives of people. I am writing this message to you today because I teach a section of FYS (First Year Seminar) called "Different Realities: Cross-Cultural Encounters." I need international students in this class! In this very small class, you, as an international student, will have a chance to get to know your American classmates closely. You'll have chance to share your culture with them and they will help you learn about U.S. culture. This class provides an opportunity to learn American culture while teaching others about your home culture and to make great friends that will last for the entire 4 years and beyond. I encourage you to sign up for this section (Section 13) of FYS! I look forward to meeting you and having you in my section of FYS in the fall! ALL THE BEST.

Mount Union's
Office of Diversity and Inclusion serves as a resource for all students. The office fosters an environment that
celebrates and embraces diversity by providing
programs, services and other educational opportunities that contribute to students' learning and growth. How would you like to ride a donkey in Greece, taste authentic pizza straight from a brick-fire oven in Italy or wander through beautiful lavender fields in France? Every year, approximately 50 Mount Union students leave Alliance for the summer, semester or full academic year to
study abroad. Students participate in a variety of approved programs at nearly 50 different universities in 29 foreign countries.
Through study abroad, students acquire academic and experientially based field studies and/or internship experiences in other cultures.
While there are several benefits to incorporating a study abroad experience into your time at Mount Union, here are just a few:
- Gaining the ability to adapt to a new environment
- Exploring stunning locations and making new friends while earning college credit
- Making yourself highly marketable to employers due to your experience of stepping outside your comfort zone and interacting with people from other cultures
- Expanding your understanding of yourself and the world
The Center for Global Education offers advising and an application process to ensure that the study abroad experience serves students' individual goals and complements their Mount Union coursework. Programs are researched and evaluated to help make sure that you have a safe, rewarding experience.

Research Opportunities
|
|
There are many opportunities for students to participate in academic research - independently,
with classmates and with faculty members. In fact, we have an entire day on campus dedicated
to academic research. SCHOLAR Day, which stands for Mount Union's student celebration
honoring
our latest academic research, will be held on Tuesday, April 25. It's a day when
students and faculty set aside time to learn from undergraduates on campus who have
conducted outstanding research projects. Students from all academic disciplines participate, and
you can now review this year's presentation schedule online.

Academic Honoraries
|
|
At Mount Union, students have ample opportunities to get involved and join
professional societies and academic honoraries
. These are organizations that directly support an academic field of study or are
linked with an academic program at Mount Union, including those that are honorary in nature.

Sustainability
|
|
It is the goal of Mount Union's
Sustainability Management Advisory Committee to meet the growing
concern for sustainability on Mount Union's campus. Through education and communication, they
facilitate awareness and action on campus as well as throughout the Alliance community.
You can take part in the Committee's efforts to create a sustainable, efficient and healthy atmosphere for
students, faculty and staff by becoming an eco-rep or Green Raider. You can also participate in a number
of sustainability programs, such as RecycleMania and Game Day Challenge.
The Mount Union Green Raiders are a group of students who promote sustainability and environmental
awareness on campus. They have hosted numerous competitions and events on campus such as America
Recycles Day, Earth Hour and Caught Green Handed.
