August 2016
Discovering God's Word...together!

DISCIPLESHIP
Coming this fall there will be some changes at Hillsboro so that more of the church family has opportunities to study God's Word. The biggest change will be the discontinuation of Wednesday evening LifeGroups in favor of a more flexible meeting schedule that better accommodates varying work and family schedules. To do this, you are needed: to pray, to participate, and perhaps to lead.  Please consider hosting and/or leading a group to fellowship and study Scripture together. The intent is to meet in a home or any number of locations on any day of the week and at the most convenient time. Perhaps a Saturday morning meeting for families with young children, a biweekly meeting before work at a coffee shop, or an evening in your home? Please prayerfully consider how you can be an important part of the discipleship at Hillsboro Baptist Church. Please contact Gena Carrazana at (434)989-8834 or [email protected].

In addition to the new LifeGroups meetings, here are the current ongoing opportunities (and drop-ins are welcome) you are invited to:

  • Sunday School: Pastor Christian will be leading the class in studying The Explicit Gospel by Mark Chandler at 9:00 am in the education wing.
  • Wednesday evening Men's Bible Study--please contact Luis Carrazana at (434)989-8862 or [email protected] for more information.
  • Youth and Young Adults Group--join for dinner, study, and activities on Sundays from 5pm to 8pm in the parsonage. Contact Jim and Julie Nelms at [email protected] for more information.

A Word from Dr. Jenkins"

Starting in the next few weeks, Christian and I will be scheduling "home communion" visits to Hillsboro Church family who request it. Please share with the church office any persons that you feel would like to be added to this list. This could certainly include persons who are in retirement homes or who are home bound.
God bless, Dr. J

Those not near, but dear!

Hillsboro is beginning a new ministry to serve our members who are geographically dispersed, whether they are away at school, are serving in the mission field or military service, or are otherwise not in our midst. Our ministry will include intentional prayer, encouragement, and care packages. We will be meeting on Saturday, September 17th at 9am in the Fellowship Hall to prepare our first shipment of packages and letters. A list will be available soon of needed items. If you know of a church member or immediate family member who is away from home, please give the name and address to Gena Carrazana at (434)989-8834 or [email protected] .  And come support our "away team"!

The Pastor Search Team
Calling a Pastor.

The Pastor Search Team continues to hear from you and the message is to stick to the course and DO NOT COMPROMISE!  Thank you all for your continued support and confidence in this team.  What a blessing it is to be serving together and to have a Shepherd like Dr. Joel as we search for the man God has in mind for us.  The team is constantly encouraged by you and your commitment to Hillsboro and. ..
we invite you to join us in a prayer campaign.

Here is what you can do:
  1.  Prepare me, oh Lord Focus, during your individual prayer time through the month of    August, on preparing Hillsboro for the next chapter.
  2.  Prepare the way, oh Lord.  During the month of September, join the Pastor Search  Team after service each Sunday, for corporate prayer focused on the man God has for      Hillsboro and his family.
  Acts 1
21 Therefore it is necessary to choose one of the men who have been with us the whole time the Lord Jesus was living among us, 22 beginning from John's baptism to the time when Jesus was taken up from us. For one of these must become a witness with us of his resurrection."
23 So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. 24 Then they prayed, "Lord, you know everyone's heart. Show us which of these two you have chosen 25 to take over this apostolic m i nistry.. "

Yours in Christ,
HBC's Pastor Search Team

MISSIONS EMPHASIS

Dr. Joel is inviting us to join together to focus on missions, so September will be dedicated to learning about and supporting missions work.  We will hear from our own missionaries and will have an opportunity to support the Virginia Baptist Alma Hunt campaign, which runs from September 11-18 (information will be available in the church foyer).

Matthew 28:19
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

 WORSHIP
These past weeks have been challenging ones for both our country and very personally for our church family. Our neighbors in West Virginia are still dealing with great loss after the flooding there, families have lost loved ones who served as police officers in both Texas and Louisiana, the upcoming election has rational people in both political arenas concerned for the future of our country...our own church family has suffered great loss and we have ones we hold near and dear who are currently dealing with serious illness. We have also seen and heard first hand the plight of refugees, most specifically in Turkey who suffer daily due to the conditions there.

In the midst of all this we have our loving God who gives us "grace upon grace" to keep trusting, who provides his comfort and surrounds us with his presence. We have the privilege and the power of prayer to storm the gates and move mighty mountains. Above all we love with his love...in word and deed. His love comforts and compels us. ( Galatians 6:2) says "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ." We fulfil his law of love as we love God and as we love our neighbors...We rebuild roofs, and we pray, we drop off a potato salad, and we pray, we visit a hospital room or a living room and give a hug and we pray... we send a note of encouragement, we send financial support, and we pray...We pray and we worship our good and faithful God.  We draw near to him and find the comfort and strength we need. ( Hebrews 4:16) reminds us...
"So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most."

In these days that seem so dark at times we can put our hope and trust in the light of the world, Jesus and we can be lights in the darkness. We can come to him as his Hillsboro church family knowing he has called us by name, as individuals and as a church. We can worship him knowing he gives good gifts to children, knowing he is above all, he is sovereign and he is worthy...worthy...worthy.

Lift up your eyes, lift up your hearts, lift up holy hands... to the Holy One who gives beauty from ashes and joy in the morning.

"And I will give you treasures hidden in the darkness--secret riches. I will do this so you may know that I am the LORD, the God of Israel, the one who calls you by name."
(Isaiah 45:3)

He promises to put a new song in our mouths even a song of praise unto our God!!! (Psalm 40:3)

Love you all,
Donna

"The Explicit Gospel" by Matt Chandler
 led by Christian Rutherford

"The marker of those who understand the gospel of Jesus Christ is that, when they stumble and fall, when they screw up, they run to God and not from him, because they clearly understand that their acceptance before God is not predicated upon their behavior but on the righteous life of Jesus Christ and his sacrificial death." - Matt Chandler The Explicit Gospel

Coming Soon - New HBC Photo Directory

Youth and Young Adults (ages 12-22)

Salvation, Repentance, Confession, Forgiveness, Honor--Those are words that we hear about in the Christian faith, but do we really understand what they mean?  This next month we will continue to take a look at these foundational pillars of our faith.  Come join us each Sunday afternoon from 5-8 p.m. at the parsonage.  Bring your appetite and your Bible and together we will feast on all that God has for us.
